As the planet reaches 9 billion people by 2050, technologies that reduce energy and water needs for farming will become increasingly important. A Silicon Valley startup called mOasis is working on materials that can help farmers produce more crops with less energy and water. mOasis is developing something called a hydrogel, which generally refers to a type of polymer that is super absorbent because it's able to form a tight bond with water molecules. Hyrdogels are used in everything from diapers to insulation for underground cables to materials for retaining water in soil in farming. mOasis' hydrogel can reduce the amount and cost of water use for farming by 30 percent while increasing the biomass - or size and weight - of a crop by 30 percent, said Susanna Kass, CEO of the Mountain View-based mOasis.

A store of information dubbed the "Knowledge Graph" now adds useful context and detail to the list of links that Google serves up. Searching for certain people, places, or things produces a box of facts alongside the regular results. The Knowledge Graph is already starting to appear in a few other Google products, and could be used to add intelligence to all of the company's software. "Search was mostly based on matching words and phrases, and not what they actually mean," says Shashidar Thakur, the tech lead for the Knowledge Graph in Google's search team. Thakur says the project was invented to change that. The Knowledge Graph can be thought of as a vast database that allows Google's software to connect facts on people, places, and things to one another. Google got the Knowledge Graph project started when it bought a startup called Metaweb in 2010; at that time, the resource contained only 12 million entries. Today it has more than 500 million entries, with more than 3.5 billion links between them.

C'est la voie suivie par SigFox, qui a lancé la semaine dernière un réseau à bas débit, qui permet de connecter des objets entre eux grâce à des bornes disposées sur le territoire national. SigFox fonctionne avec des petits modems qui doivent être connectés aux appareils. Modems qui ne mesurent pas plus de quelques millimètres carrés. Et qui s'occupent de recevoir et d'émettre de très petits signaux, des mWatts, soit des millimètres de Watts. De fait, cela en fait "une solution qui consomme peu d'énergie puisqu'il s'agit de signaux faibles, et qui résistent au passage du temps ; on pourrait oublier un modem sur un compteur électrique pendant vingt ans", note Ludovic Le Moan, PDG de la startup. Pour Philippe Gautier, directeur général associé de Business2any, un tel réseau répond à un véritable besoin. 

The Imps get down to business the moment you wake up: Your blinds automatically open, and your coffee maker starts brewing your favorite dark roast. But the mischief doesn't end there. Throughout the day, the Imps assume control over other household technology. Your garage door sends you a text message confirming that it's closed. Your fridge sends you a shopping list reminding you to buy milk. Your ambient room lighting changes color at dusk for a more moody vibe. And when 9 p.m. rolls around, your dishwasher turns on to take advantage of cheaper utility rates. This is the connected world envisioned by the team at Electric Imp, a six-employee startup that's created the Imp card, a small wafer of plastic that houses a Cortex-M3 processor and Wi-Fi antenna, and taps into an accompanying cloud service. Imp cards can conceivably be installed in any electronic device, making it possible to connect conventional appliances to the internet.

A radio from Neul-or one of several startups working on similar technology-upends this whole system. An adaptive radio doesn't always use the same fixed frequency but checks to see which frequencies around it aren't in use, then borrows empty air for a short-term connection. As devices move around, the connection can shift, too. Collier's loop around Cambridge is a demonstration-part of a trial led by Microsoft (MSFT) and other tech giants-that the idea works technologically. If it works commercially, too, it could change the dynamics of the wireless business.

"One of the most interesting start-ups that keeps popping up on my radar screen is Crowdflower, which connects nonprofits and companies with people around the globe looking to work on crowdsourced tasks. It's a fascinating glimpse at future contract labor models and at how work relationships are becoming more distributed, global, ephemeral and efficient.
