it will be with cities like PlanIT Valley, currently being built from scratch in northern Portugal. Slated for completion in 2015, PlanIT Valley won't be a mere "smart city" - it will be a sentient city, with 100 million sensors embedded throughout, running on the same technology that's in the Formula One cars, each sensor sending a stream of data through the city's trademarked Urban Operating System (UOS), which will run the city with minimal human intervention.

Living PlanIT's model for a city of the future is being developed with the legislated endorsement of Municipality of Paredes in northern Portugal and the national government. Called PlanIT Valley, it has been designated a Project of National Interest (PIN) by the Portuguese Government. It will be built in a series of phases and will accommodate a population of 225,000 when completed in 2015.

A new product dubbed the Glove Tricorder by Med Sensation aims to make it easier for doctors - and patients - to diagnose breast cancer as well as problems like enlarged kidneys and other sub-dermal issues. The gloves currently contain a number of sensors including pressure feedback loops and accelerometers. Eventually the company plans to add ultrasound pads to the tips of the glove, allowing doctors to see inside the breast as they manipulate the tissue.

This is the connected world envisioned by the team at Electric Imp, a six-employee startup that's created the Imp card, a small wafer of plastic that houses a Cortex-M3 processor and Wi-Fi antenna, and taps into an accompanying cloud service. Imp cards can conceivably be installed in any electronic device, making it possible to connect conventional appliances to the internet.
