Addiction is a word seething with negative connotations. It implies that someone is out of control with their life, making bad decisions with their money, and placing everyone around them at risk. While we've all heard the horror stories associated with drug addiction, we have only recently begun to grapple with the overarching implications of the gadgets and technologies rapidly permeating our lives. Our technology is consuming virtually all of our attention. Even our dogs have resigned themselves to the fact they are no long man's best friend. But while those who are desperately concerned with the wellbeing of our society are raising red flags, the business world is being incentivized to create technologies that elevate our addictions even further.

"Social media addiction: a disease likely affecting millions, but one that's hard to track because it comes in many forms. The afflicted may reveal themselves as serial likers. They may have push notifications set for the most minor of social media updates. They may self-identify as "mavens," "gurus" or "ninjas." But regardless of their appearance, they do walk among us. There's "The Constant Checker," who can't go more than a few minutes without looking at his Twitter mentions or Instagram likes. There's the Klout-obsessed "Self-Proclaimed Influencer." In a place where technology is seen as an all-powerful answer, it is increasingly being seen as too powerful, even addictive. The concern, voiced in conferences and in recent interviews with many top executives of technology companies, is that the lure of constant stimulation - the pervasive demand of pings, rings and updates - is creating a profound physical craving that can hurt productivity and personal interactions. "If you put a frog in cold water and slowly turn up the heat, it'll boil to death - it's a nice analogy," said Mr. Crabb, who oversees learning and development at Facebook. People "need to notice the effect that time online has on your performance and relationships."

The past few weeks have seen some fairly dramatic moves by newspaper chains in both the U.S. and Canada, who have chosen to stop printing their papers on certain days in an attempt to save money. But in most cases this has been a result of what Ken Doctor has called a "forced march" towards digital, rather than a choice to embrace the online world at the expense of print. A single chart used by veteran internet analyst Mary Meeker in a presentation this week illustrates why that decision is so difficult: because print is still a massive source of advertising revenue. But the chart also shows why the print-based media industry is so afraid of the future - because that source is rapidly dwindling.
