21st Century Skills: Will Our Students Be Prepared? - 5 views

Our ability to teach a lot of 21st skills is definitely obstructed by "teaching to the test." One day we will actually be able to measure how the students can use the skills, instead of how much i...

NMC Horizon Project Report - 3 views

  •
This report came out last week and is the pk-12 2011 edition that describes "emerging technologies likely to have a large impact on teaching, learning, research or creative expression within education around the globe." The groups producing the report are the New Media Consortium and the International Society for Technology in Education. I highly suggest reading the executive summary which gives the trends and challenges predicted for the next five years. It then summarizes the six emerging (within five years) technologies that are the upcoming trends in education. The main report details each technology, gives examples for how each can be implemented in the classroom, and provides additional web sites as resources.

How to encourage students to ask their own questions - 1 views

"A six-step process for teaching students to formulate their own questions can encourage them to take ownership of their learning, and deepen their understanding of a subject, write Dan Rothstein and Luz Santana, authors of the book, "Make Just One Change: Teach Students to Ask Their Own Questions." The Question Formulation Technique can be used to introduce new material to students, gauge their understanding during a lesson or to help students set a new learning agenda at the end of a unit, the authors write. Harvard Education Letter (September/October 2011)"

Teaching Living Memory as History - 0 views

I don't normally read the USA Today, but I came across this article and I thought that it hit upon some important points that we need to remember when we deal with students and the idea of history and memory.

Educational Leadership:Teaching Students to Think:Effective Grading Practices - 2 views

This article is proof that many of our grading practices are ineffective yet still being used- proof that another part of education has been unchanged for too long.

EDUCAUSE - 1 views

This website has some interesting information on major educational initiatives that are going on currently, and educational resources for K-12 and higher education.. For example I found a podcast on using mobile devices in education. My graduate students are all required to have mobile devices, perhaps I could be doing more with this technology?

Digital Natives, Digital Immigrants - 1 views

I read Marc Prensky's article for my other class. I like the way he contrasts the two groups, especially within the frame work of the immigrants trying to educate the natives. He does a nice job describing how the two generations view each other, of course supporting the theory of why educators must change.

This is a great website for ear training. One of the downsides is that it does have a cost to get the full benefit of the tool but anyone can sample the activities for free. Teachers can track student progress as well.

Critical Literacy and Creativity - 0 views

  •
This wiki is part of a group project between four educators with a common interest in Critical Literacy and Creativity. The authors assert that creativity is a part of human beings that affects how we live and understand and that it is an integral part of education and learning, not an added extra.

Edublogs - education blogs for teachers, students and institutions - 0 views

  •
This is free and there's no need for an email address. I think I would create the site for each group of students so that I'm in control of the user name and passwords. I can enroll them in an "author" role so they can be in control of the pertinent areas of the page. I think this would be an awesome thing to incorporate into my political parties and election simulation for my class "parties" to create a fake blog for their candidate on the campaign trail. After spending too long trying to create a sample, I realized I'll need more direction with this one. It's not as intuitive as I thought it would be. If anyone has any hints or tips, I'm open.

Online sticky notes - 2 views

This is a great collaborative brainstorming tool that will allow all students to contribute, not just those who are willing to put their voice out there. If you like post-it notes, you'll love it! -I'm using it as a brainstorming activity for my students to set up their class goals and "laws" for the class constitution in the first days of school. It's also private in that the students need to have the specific link in order to find the site. I would post that on blackboard.
