Summary of current Laptop Initiatives - 1 views

  •
This was compiled by NC state's College of Education and reviews states that have current laptop initiatives in place and looks at the planning and implementation of these programs as well as student outcomes. It was interesting to read about HENRICO COUNTY in this, which is the largest school system in the United States to have deployed a 1:1 laptop program on its own. I didn't know that!

My mentor twitted this article. As a Spanish teacher I found it very interesting because it shows how a parent initiative can impact education. It shows the importance of technology for the students, but more than that, the importance of parent involvement in education.

Thinking Creatively: Teachers as designers of Content, Technology and Pedagogy part1 - ... - 4 views

I actually watched each of the presentations (I only bookmarked the first) because they were all so entertaining and thought-provoking. I especially like the history of technology (e.g. oral to writing to print) and the threats each was perceived to have on the previous. I wonder if showing these to teachers might introduce our county's "21st century learning" initiative and the need for the "less than willing" to embrace constantly changing technology.

  •
Two recent studies of schoolwide one-to-one computing initiatives--one in the United States and one in Canada--suggest that using laptops in the classroom can help improve students' writing skills and bolster overall academic success. The studies come as an increasing number of states and school districts are rolling out laptop programs of their own.

"Henrico County Schools System has adopted the TPACK as the Framework for professional development and 21st Century Learning in the Henrico County Schools System. Henrico County is one of the largest and earliest districts to pioneer and implement a one-to-one initiative. They have adopted this model as its conceptual framework to guide their progress towards the 21st Century Learning."
