In a statement given to the newspaper, the department said that they received word of the post through a private Facebook message to one of its officers. After receiving the tip, police then went to Cox-Brown's house and were able to match a vehicle there to one that had hit two others in the early hours of the morning.

For more than two years, I have been writing blog posts on a weekly basis for the Foreign Policy Association. More than anything, what that experience has offered me is one of the greatest tools that graduate students need to complete a dissertation: confidence in their writing.

Every entity must learn to curate their Social Identity. Social Identity is how the world perceives an entity. In the past that audience might have been limited or filtered to a select few. No more, social media is the great equalizer and spreads the word fast. Some might call this your brand. Regardless of the naming, data is being collected and directed for use about you. You are being watched and talked about, so what can you do about it? There are six elements of a person, group or government's Social Identity:

This is what I LOVE about this article: "Students relish the feedback a comment gives, whether it is from a classmate, a parent, or someone they have never met. The audience becomes part of the student's learning." Now, I still have privacy concerns, but from reading her comments to others who were skeptical she says that she has not received inappriopriate comments in the 8 years she has been doing this. OK- Matt, my eyes are opening...a little bit. ;)

Though this information is important, is it really the most important information you are looking for when hiring an educator you are going to charge with helping to shape the minds of children who will ultimately dictate the future of our world?"

The college ultimately denied the student admission, he said, because her academic record wasn't competitive. But had her credentials been better, those indiscreet posts could have scuttled her chances.

"You have the power to shape the way others see you online, so it's wise to be a bit proactive. As a first step, Google yourself to see what others might find. Next, ask a couple of colleagues to describe the person they uncover when search for your name. Based on what you learn from Steps 1 and 2, begin to create, edit, or revamp your online content to craft the image you want to project."
