    This article discusses the assessment of a class of girls who were issued a certain type of graphics calculator. The teacher of this class was known for his integration of calculators in his course curriculum, and his classes were known for achieving above average on tests. The primary study was to investigate the effects of learning with the use of a graphing calculator. Classroom conversation was recorded and analyzed in order to determine how well the class understood the curriculum. This article while limited only to certain number of students delves deeply into how they were taught, and their response to the use of graphics calculators in the classroom.

One-Way Traffic? Connections between Literacy Practices at Home and in the Nursery - 0 views

    This article reports on a small-scale study which examined the home literacy practices of a group of 3 and 4 year-old children in a working-class community in the north of England and explored how far these practices were reflected in the curriculum of the nursery the children attended. The data illustrate that there was a dissonance between out-of-school and schooled literacy practices and that there was more evidence of nursery literacy practices infiltrating the home than vice versa. Children's literacy practices in the home were focused on media and popular cultural texts and the article argues for greater recognition of these contemporary cultural practices in early years policy documentation and curriculum guidance. The Right of the Child to Be Heard in Education Litigation: An Analysis of the "Intelligent Design" Pennsylvania Case on the Separation of Church and State in the Public Schools - 0 views

    Examining a specific legal decision in Pennsylvania regarding high school curriculum, the author examines yet another facet of the evolution debate-the students' voice. All too often, the rights of children are overlooked in the development of or debate over educational curriculum. Grover cites the Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989) as recognizing children as competent and independent thinkers whose input is not only relevant, but also valuable. The focus of the paper is on children's rights and how they were neglected in Kitzmiller et al. v. Dover Area School District et al, although attention is paid to church state separation and science education. This source is particularly useful for examining the role of the child in the education arena-just because they are on the receiving end of the education continuum does not mean they do not have a role in the discourse. Their voices are perhaps the most important of all.

Young children are expected to exhibit many requisite skills prior to kindergarten. Thus, the advancement of pre-reading and writing skills development become one of the many areas of focus for early childhood teachers. This study focused on the advancement of young children's emergent literacy and letter recognition skills through developmentally appropriate instruction and need based adapted activities using the Early Literacy and Learning Model (ELLM) curriculum. Moore's law has driven microprocessor architects to design platforms that exploit the performance gain of multi-core processors. The problem resides in the fact that many computer science curricula do not touch upon parallel computing because while the fundamentals may be relatively basic, other aspects of the technology is extremely difficult for students to understand and implement.     This is an article from Workshop On Computer Architecture Education in the Proceedings of the 2007 workshop on Computer architecture education. The authors are concerned about the computer science curriculum at Georgia Tech and how so many different subtopics of computing have made their way into a computer science degree. So by reconsidering what should be considered the core of computer science, they define what is necessary for a computer science student to know at the hardware level. I find this article interesting because its cause does not only apply to George Tech, but to all computer science curricula nationwide. The main academic concern of the article is the separation of operating system courses and courses in computer architecture. The operating system is so close to the architecture that the two should be wrapped into one. This would streamline the hardware and software level of interaction and reduce confusion caused by the separation of these areas of study.

    The authors discuss how college students' overreliance on credit cards and accumulated student loans have left many graduates with outstanding debt and poor credit scores. Credit card companies aggressively solicit college students, who are enticed by the power a credit card grants. Upon graduation, students with large sums of debt may find it difficult to find a job or rent property due to poor credit. To counter this surge of irresponsibility, the authors propose colleges create programs to educate students on how to use a credit card responsibly. The problem with creating more programs is universities must spend extra funds to create and maintain such an initiative. The authors fail to propose an early education curriculum for younger children to immerse them in the area of personal finance.
