Financial Literacy Important for Future - 0 views

  •
Ian B. Davidson discusses the importance of financial literacy and how American society has gradually shifted from a "save now, buy later society" into a "buy now, save later society." He discusses the accelerating rate of bankruptcies as well as family breakups and growing welfare in the U.S. Davidson discusses a program that he sponsors at Montana State University that allows students to manage a $50,000 portfolio. The effectiveness of this program speaks for itself because its returns are continually much higher than the average Dow Jones returns.

Media Literacy in the Risk Society: Toward a Risk Reduction Strategy - 0 views

  •
The idea of media literacy prompts an increasingly divisive debate between educators who wish to protect children from the commercialization of global markets and those who challenge critical media studies as misguided, outdated, and ineffective. We have provided a historical overview of changing conceptions of media literacy as preparation and protection in market society, arguing that contemporary concerns about children's fast food marketing and sedentary lifestyles call for new approaches to the education of citizen-consumers in a risk society. Our case study demonstrates that a media education programme can provide scaffolding for children's critical thinking about their sedentary lifestyles and media consumption. Children's and Adolescents' Developing Perceptions of Gender Inequality - 0 views

  •
This article addresses children when growing up and how they for opinions about women and men and their bias. Young children often see their mothers doing house work and their father work, so they assume the men play the dominate role in society from a young age. They often believe "males dominate and females complicate". From a young age, this attitude is installed in children This research will benefit my paper because it correlates with how the media perceives women on television and provides an explanation for the stereotype of childcare worker, homemaker and teacher. It shows how women develop a role in society and the media from a very young age. The media continues to perceive them this way because the media was taught this is the role genders play.

Race & Gender in Politics - 0 views

  •
Rubin describes how sexism is more socially acceptable that racism in our society. Rubin states it plays a bigger role in politics than most people believe. This also discusses how John McCain addressed Hilary Clinton when asked "How do we beat the bitch?" and he responded. This article also addresses Barack Obama and his stance on sexism and racism. This article would be useful in my paper because it describes a good example of how sexism can be used in a presidential election and the difference between sexism and racism. Although it does not relate directly to literacy, it does relate directly to politics and the views of sexism in the previous elections and with media. I can use this for a solid example and explanation against women.

Naturalism vs. Supernaturalism: How to Survive the Culture Wars - 0 views

  •
Clark turns to philosophy to assess the relationship between naturalism and supernaturalism. In a political sense, all debates must deal with the physical world, for that is all that we know. Religious doctrines are acceptable as moral implicates, but in order to extend universality in the public realm, the language cannot be theological. The issue is essentially linguistic; by using a common language grounded in empiricism, we can better tackle the issues at hand. Clark suggests that the best mode of pacifying these views is to turn toward empiricism, which is grounded in evidence rather than faith. There is no way to "prove" faith. However, it is important to guard against the threat of "totalitarian empiricism" in which uniformity replaces consciousness. We live in a pluralistic society, and so it is to remain. Extending this thinking to the evolution-creation debate can perhaps shed light on a very plausible and practical solution.

untitledLineaments of Cannabis Culture: Rules Regulating Use in Amsterdam and San Franc... - 0 views

  •
This article talks about some common sense rules cannabis users should regulate their use. By comparative study of marijuana users in Amsterdam and San Francisco data shows similar use patterns and having to do with drug control. Despite different drug policies the two cities are similar in marijuana use. This is excellent support because it shows that it does not matter if marijuana is legal or not. This data comparison also supports reasons for legalization. If one country has legalized marijuana and it is not effecting their society negatively than the US needs to reconsider marijuana laws.

Motivation and financial literacy - 0 views

  •
In this article the authors discuss the reason for lack of financial literacy among young people in today's society. Their main argument for the lack of financial literacy is a student's not having motivation. Research shows that this is true for students even after taking part in a financial literacy curriculum. The authors were able to find data to back up the point that lack of motivation leads to lack of financial literacy.

Individuals, who were not determined to be financially literate, stated that they were aware of their problem but never sought help. Individuals who were determined as most financially literate and most financially illiterate showed common characteristics, none which included any connection to gender.

The article offers views on the debate over the legalization of marijuana for medical uses in the U.S. It says that the issue over marijuana access to medical treatment rests solely upon the power between states and the federal government. People have challenged the states for legalization of medical marijuana. This is another article that challenges the states in their medical marijuana reform laws. Men and women throughout the US challenge states authority over medical marijuana legalization. This debacle creates uproars and give me evidence of peoples push for reform laws and a changing society.

Talking About Money With Mom and Dad - 0 views

A major problem with the ever growing population of the elderly is their children's financial literacy. It is important that the children of aging parents are proactive and get involved with their parents financial matters. Children need to be aware of the government funded programs as well as the financial strategies that their parents can qualify for based upon their age. There are often outside factors that contribute to complications of sorting out financial documents and dollar figures and children of the aging need to be aware of these issues as well as the help that is available to them.

Design of future systems - 0 views

This is an article from Design, Automation, and Test in Europe in Proceedings of the conference on Design, automation and test in Europe. The author of the article suggests the creation of a new type of profession that might result from the rapid advancement of hardware and software. Instead of having two separate entities that develop computer systems, the hardware and software professions, there will be one profession that handles the development of both. However, both existing professions would need to join together to make this possible. The hardware technology produced from this joining would be similar to field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), an architecture that can be "reprogrammed" on the fly. This profession would be more like the software development profession as the hardware can be reprogrammed for a particular task. I find this interesting as it could technically eliminate the lack of communication between hardware and software engineers as one would be handling both.
