Online performance analysis by statistical sampling of microprocessor performance counters - 0 views

    This is an article from International Conference on Supercomputing in the Proceedings of the 19th annual international conference on Supercomputing. The article provides an in depth analysis of a particular technique in monitoring performance in real-time of hardware performance counters that then further analysis of bottlenecks in the microarchitecture and the software that meets hardware at a high-level abstraction layer. This real-time analysis can improve the optimization of existing software systems and lead to more efficient platforms, even applications in parallel computing. I found this article interesting as it is a technique that can improve the level of hardware literacy not only within the hardware engineering community, but it is also a technique that can be used by software developers to study the performance of their code in real life circumstances.

Gender, Academic Performance and University Athletes - 0 views

    This paper investigates gender differences in academic performance among university athletes at an NCAA Division I school. Using regression analysis, the findings suggest that background scholastic achievement variables and race influence university academic performance for student athletes, but sport participation measures and race are negatively related to university academic performance for males only. The consequences of inequalities between men's and women's athletic programs are explored. Implications for academic programs are discussed. (Abstract from author as it appears on EBSCO.)

The article also contains information on the background of the use of graphing calculators, such as how they affect students' performance, their attitudes towards the subject, and their confidence. This study shows how the performance can be enhanced by the use of graphics calculators.

Tools for computer architecture research - 0 views

    This is an article from ACM SIGMETRICS Performance Evaluation Review. The authors of the article emphasis the importance of simulation in designing and virtually testing components of computer architecture. They also suggest that simulators can be used as teaching tools for exposing tough to grasp concepts in both the hardware and machine level language that are otherwise impossible to understand. I find this article insightful because it suggests that utilization of such simulators at the architecture level will lead to much more efficient hardware by use of metrics used in virtual performance tests. However, design of accurate enough simulators have proven to be an arduous task, which is addressed by the article.

    This article discusses the great impact that self-concepts have on students' grades and performance, mainly in English and mathematics. These authors found different results than have previously been found in tests; they found that "there were significant positive paths from math self-concepts to subsequent math outcomes but not to subsequent English outcomes." Also, they found that girls had higher English and math grades but lower math self-concepts then boys, these results differ from previous test which claimed that the gender difference was diminishing. These results were interesting due to their difference in regards to other tests conducted.

    This is a panel discussion in the Journal of Computing Sciences in Colleges that aims to address the issues associated with the advent of readily available multi-core and clustered computing systems. Moore's law has driven microprocessor architects to design platforms that exploit the performance gain of multi-core processors. The problem resides in the fact that many computer science curricula do not touch upon parallel computing because while the fundamentals may be relatively basic, other aspects of the technology is extremely difficult for students to understand and implement. However, this is the direction computer systems are headed and something must be done to utilize this technology to its fullest extent.

Does Literacy Mediate the Relationship between Education and Health Outcomes? A Study o... - 0 views

    We sought to determine whether literacy mediates the relationship between education and glycemic control among diabetes patients. Methods: We measured educational attainment, literacy using the Short Test of Functional Health Literacy in Adults (s-TOFHLA), and glycemic control (HbA1c) in 395 diabetes patients at a U.S. public hospital. We performed path analysis to compare two competing models to explain glycemic control. The direct effects model estimated how education was related to HbA1c; the mediational model estimated the strength of the direct relationship when the additional pathway from education to literacy to HbA1c was added. Results: Both the model with a direct effect of education on HbA1c and the model with literacy as a mediator were supported by good fit to observed data. The mediational model, however, was a significant improvement, with the additional path from literacy to HbA1c reducing the discrepancy from observed data (p<0.01). After including this path, the direct relationship between education and HbA1c fell to a non-significant threshold. Conclusions: In a low-income population with diabetes, literacy mediated the relationship between education and glycemic control. This finding has important implications for both education and health policy. (Abstract taken from JSTOR.)

Early Literacy Instruction and Learning in Kindergarten: Evidence from the Early Childh... - 0 views

    Using a nationally representative sample of 13,609 kindergarten children in 2,690 classrooms and 788 schools from the base year of the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Kindergarten Class of 1998-1999, along with three-level hierarchical linear models, this study investigates the impact of early literacy instruction on kindergarten children's learning, as measured by direct cognitive test scores, indirect teacher ratings of children's achievement in language and literacy, and indirect teacher ratings of children's approaches to learning. Two composite measures of phonics and integrated language arts are constructed from teachers' reports of their instructional practices. Findings show that classroom mean outcomes were significantly higher when classroom teachers reported using both integrated language arts and phonics more often. However, children with low initial performance benefited less from integrated language arts instruction, as measured by direct measures of achievement; such differential effects of instruction were not observed for teacher ratings of children's achievement and learning style. Policy implications of the findings are discussed. (Abstract taken from JSTOR.)

    Murnane focuses on the children living in poverty and the low performance of the students. His goal is to make the No Child Left Behind Act more realistic. The goal should be to concentrate on the children's growth as a student, not to reach an obtainable test score. The government needs to improve conditions of schools of children living in poverty. The author suggests that the poverty stricken schools need to strengthen their staff in order to change anything. The main goal of children living in poverty is to get them to graduate from high school. The rate of kids graduating from high school in low income schools is down a great deal of percent than suburban schools. Murnane gives his opinion of setting obtainable goals not only for middle class students, but students that come from a poverty stricken area.

    Rabb discusses how the No Child Left Behind Act has been underfunded leaving the teachers unqualified and underprepared to teach the necessary material for standardized testing. This is one of the reasons students have still received poor results in standardized test scores.     This article talks about marijuana and other drugs use and rise among college students. There is a sample of 119 schools that consist of different demographics. There is different samples that take into account social usage of the drug and other illicit uses of the drug among college students. This was sample taken to monitor the use of marijuana and other drugs among college students. Rates are higher in public institutions compared to private institutions. This is good insight on the uses of marijuana and how it relates to different college and demographics in collegiate atmospheres. These surveys will help support my statistical information needed to present better understanding of this information. With this in mind there are other things that I will be using in my research to back up the information in my paper. With a well rounded institution like Harvard I understand how the insight will perform in my paper.

    The author examines differences between data they have collected of 13 urban schools. They collected this data by using test scores, surverys, and case studies, in which other people cmae into schools and watched them. They found very inconsistent information because of the small sample size they had. The only assessed low and high scoring students, which may have caused problems. The teachers use assesment in the classroom to see what students needs are and to have them achieve the goals.
