This article is from EBSCO. Research was done to find relationships between ethnicity, gender, fast food walk-ability and physical activity in regards to obesity. The relationships show that there is significant variability among gender and ethnicity in regards to obesity. The author reports on the study "To Read or Not to Read," which was released by the United States National Endowment for the Arts. The study found that Americans read less in 2007 compared with previous years. The study found that reading abilities for teenagers and adults have declined, whereas reading abilities for younger children have increased. The impact which the decline in reading abilities has had on American workers is discussed. The author states that the amount of time which people read on a daily basis has declined. This paper investigates gender differences in academic performance among university athletes at an NCAA Division I school. Using regression analysis, the findings suggest that background scholastic achievement variables and race influence university academic performance for student athletes, but sport participation measures and race are negatively related to university academic performance for males only. The consequences of inequalities between men's and women's athletic programs are explored. Implications for academic programs are discussed. (Abstract from author as it appears on EBSCO.)

The article addresses the idea of "religious illiteracy" in the United States as of early 2007. The author relates the lack of general religious knowledge among his students at Boston University. He believes that religious illiteracy is more dangerous than cultural illiteracy because religion is the "most volatile" constituent of culture. He notes that some knowledge of the world's religions is essential in processing messages from politicians, the media, and education. He believes that, in the interest of civics, all U.S. undergraduate students should be required to take an academic religious studies course. Thaler discusses the "financial literacy crisis" facing most Americans. Today, a record number of Americans are inept when it comes to financial literacy and as a result accumulate large sums of debt and fail to plan for the future. The author explains that Americans get into trouble because current financial systems such as credit cards are not user-friendly. To counter this escalating problem, researchers believe financial programs should be created that provide consumers with basic financial knowledge and assist them in making good choices. Finally, parents must begin teaching financial literacy to their children at a young age and not keep the subject a private matter. Thaler's argument that new financial programs should be created is logical given the current crisis situation he identifies, but he fails to outline a way to do so. In addition the article also references a study that suggests that Parents that teach their kids about the positive impact that money management can have on their lives can help them made better informed decisions as adults. Many parents lack the knowledge of financial literacy themselves and therefore their children grow up knowing very little about the importance financial literacy. The lack of financial literacy knowledge among the youth has caused unease and has inspired new programs designed to help parents teach their children.

The author addresses the importance of opening up the lines of communication between parents and their children. Children learn by example and it is important to help children understand the importance of why decisions are made in a household as well as differentiate the difference between want and need. If parents act responsibly with money, their children can learn from their actions. The article encourages parents to teach their children that money is a resource, a gift but not an end to a means. It drives home the fact the money alone does not buy happiness. Cross encourages stewardship and that realization that money is a way to share the benefits of life with people who have less.
