We launched our "blogging" service about 18 months ago after some real heated discussions about affordances of a system like this. Our argument to our primary IT group revolved around creating an environment that was an open publishing platform - not just a blog service. When we stopped talking about blogs they began to understand the power.

The rapid rise in popularity of twitter in the past year has brought to mind the following question: what are some of the potential uses of twitter or other microblogging platforms in teacher education courses?

As you may have heard, a number of contributors in the Sakai community have begun talking about, and even working on, something being called Sakai 3. Sakai 3 would be a new version of Sakai representing significant change to the end-user experience and, likely, the underlying technology.

You may think that many adults have joined the online trend mainly to network professionally with others in their field. However, that turns out not to be true. Instead adults, like teens, are there to socialize with their friends and people they already know. Nearly nine in ten social network users (89%) say they use the networks to stay in touch with friends, and 57% say they use it to make plans with friends. Under half (49%) use the sites to make new friends.

Because of the rapidly growing popularity of social networking sites and in an attempt to reach out to those participating, many libraries have created their own Twitter accounts. Although the original intent was to network with patrons and others within their community, many libraries are finding that Twitter has many other uses beyond the simple "what are you doing?" tweet.

Have you ever wanted to change your life? Make it easier or, at least, get rid of the tough stuff? Have you ever simply asked yourself, "What if?" Anyone who wants a void filled, a problem solved, or a question answered, can learn to innovate. And it doesn't matter how much education you have or how high you sit on the corporate ladder. If you think that learning innovation means reading boring instructional manuals and paying a fortune for classes, you're wrong.
