This presentation on slideshare was put together by Glasgow City College and shares the work they have done on making their Moodle user friendly. It is interesting that more often than not FE colleges are more advanced than HE institutions in the design and development of Moodle.

Highlights * We explore factors affecting students' engagement with Moodle and Facebook. * Students were not interested in using Moodle, yet active on Facebook. * We use Activity Theory as a lens for data interpretation. * Factors are categorized as technological, individual, and community levels.

Interesting! As are a number of the papers suggested afterwards which I will bookmark too! As an aside you may be interested in the paper Cass Business School students present to the Moodle Research Conference last year: http://research.moodle.net/mod/data/view.php?d=7&rid=124 One point of interest I'm keen to follow is the possible rise in more student-led studies (at City?) - in this case, both surveying students and by students. I'm also interested in how we could look more at involving learners in the design process.

Once you manage to go through login (apologies for non staff limitation) and after selecting ENROLL ME you are faced with helpful stuff for Moodle use. Like in the story of Ali Baba and 40 Thieves. This time is not Sesame Open but Moodle Open.

Ratings on Moodle Forums - thought from TEAP and student feedback - use to allow non-verbal engagement with forum. Numerical rating possible at least - maybe can have a like, agree, disagree, good point etc rating? Adding more opportunity for the lurkers?

A beginners guide to how to write a guide on moodle. Not a replacement for someone giving you a face to face demonstration but a good place to start if you are a beginner

Paper presented at 2013 Moodle Research conference - part of final year undergraduate research at Cass. I think it's important to look at data directly from students. Can we make them real partners in the design and experience of courses?

Queen Mary carried out a useful survey on their students' experience of their Moodle VLE in 2012/13. This report is very detailed and thorough. It covers many similar issues to those we have faced at City University and many of the learning points and recommendations are relevant to us.
