Film Students go to the Oscars - 4 views

I'm so happy they decided to continue this tradition rather than hiring models. The quotes in the article made me root for the students, they really highlight the fact that they are just incredibly gifted and happy students pursuing a dream - "Amos said if she meets supporting actress nominee Lupita Nyong'o, 'I would cry.'"

Wow I'm really glad you posted this because I was embarrassingly uneducated on the subject. In terms of the the story in general, I think it was interesting how the page was set up. Rather than just having a story and a few pictures to back up the text, they had an intro and then different sections like "In other developments" or an entire section of pictures. I think we could definitely do something like that for our website, especially with smaller things like news updates.

Opinion: The damaging messages of proms - 21 views

While reading this article, I kept thinking back to prom last year. Some of the things in the article applied to me, but others didn't. Then I realized though that prom is different for everyone, especially for people in other places. We are lucky to live in Marin where anyone can ask anyone, or where you don't have to spend a lot of money on a dress, but I doubt that this is the case everywhere.

Motive Still Unclear, Details on Maryland Shooting Suspect Emerge - 1 views

Unfortunately there has been another shooting. This article centers around the shooter's background, and possible motives. Why do we seem so keen on always finding answers? Do you think society views possible answers as more news worthy than the event itself?
I just needed to post this. Man who Fired Marijuana-Wrapped Arrow into Prison Claims he... - 20 views

Hahahaha! Honestly the only question I had while reading this article was, 'If his excuse was that he was trying to shoot a squirrel, what's his explanation for the attached marijuana?' I was kind of disappointed that he didn't have an explanation for that. The only explanation I can think of that seems rational if he is going with his squirrel story is that he's crazy.
"My Daughter's Homework is Killing Me" - 53 views

I'm really glad this parent wrote this. It makes me want to do something similar with my dad because he doesn't seem to realize just how much homework I have. I think this story is an effective feature, however I think I would approach writing it differently. Maybe more of a summary of the week as a whole, and then add more statistics to it.

Do you think being too connected to our technology is a bad thing? If so, are you going to do anything to stop yourself, or do you think at some point it's inevitable?
Lil B clothing line? - 6 views

I don't think that this is too obsessive at all. Artists are incredibly passionate and create based off of what inspires them. So many clothes these days look really similar but with different prints/patterns, it's easy to forget that making clothes is actually an art form. I've written entire poems based off of one person, this is similar, just with a different artistic outlet. Good for her, and these clothes are amazing and original. Lil B should be incredibly honored.
New Policies Regarding Back to School Dance at Redwood - 22 views

I can see some parallels to Redwood's new policy and ours, but I don't think that we making any of these changes because Redwood is doing it. We are making homecoming this year semi-formal, and increasing the number of security guards, and we are also going to do pat downs, but we do that every year. Our changes are due to the inappropriate dancing at past dances, especially last years dance, it seems like Redwood's changes are for a similar reason. While both dances are changing, I don't people should automatically assume they won' t be fun.

I can't decide if the Army is overreacting and the soldiers are just trying to find an outlet for self expression, or if the soldiers are in the wrong. What do you think? Why?
Snapchat Nudes Being Posted Online - 28 views

This is horrible, the fact that Facebook decided that making a page simply for nude snapchats makes me extremely disappointed in society. Facebook can facilitate cyber bullying because people can write on other people's walls, or create fake accounts to harass other people with. While this is bad, the idea of Facebook is for friends to connect, and positive things are supposed to come of it, so there is some justification in the website. However making a page for people to post nude snapchats as revenge, without the person who sent the picture knowing is horrible. There is no justification for it, and only bad things can come of it. That page would be humiliating and demoralizing.
Amanda Bynes pyschiatric evaluation - 24 views

This is really sad, but I feel like all the press is making if worse. Like Declan said, I'm sure most of us know people who have experimented with alcohol and drugs, and by the press focusing on it, Bynes feels like she cannot control her life (which is exhibited in the article when Bynes says she is threatening to sue all the magazines that have written about her). I think that while she is in the Roosevelt center, the press should stop following her, and if she happens to get better, then they can focus on how well she has recovered. Although this is very unlikely to happen, because as we've seen in Ace in the Hole, to trashy magazines, bad news is good news.

Soldier pleads guilty to avoid death penalty from massacre - 3 views

This is a very difficult trial to determine because war can have very strange effects on people. I understand that the civilians from the attacked villages want Bales to be executed because of what he did to their families, while I do not believe in the death penalty, I can see why they would want revenge. What really annoyed me was the fact that the army wanted Biles executed as well. As the article states, the army "broke" him, he has PTSD and a serious brain injury from fighting, and now that they army has used all that they can from him, they want to punish him. The article suggests that he does not really know what he was doing during the massacres, or he was not in the right state of mind, and afterwards he did not remember much. While his crimes were still horrible, I do not think he would have committed them if had not been "broken" by the war.
Are Doctors Prejudiced Against Overweight People? - 21 views
-
I was really shocked to find out that this was going on. I understand the last point made in the article, that doctors are trained to point out medical problems, and obesity is something that they cannot just supply antibiotics for and be done with it, however simply wagging your finger at someone about their weight when they come in for a different problem is not helping anyone. I think that overweight people know that they are overweight, and the doctor does not need to remind them when they come in with complaints of a sore throat. As the article points out, doctors constantly telling their patients to lose weight when it is not relevant to their appointment has actually caused people to stop going to the doctor, which can be very dangerous. I think that medical schools should start teaching students how to interact with all sorts of patients, because it has become a very important part of their job.
