This is a very difficult trial to determine because war can have very strange effects on people. I understand that the civilians from the attacked villages want Bales to be executed because of what he did to their families, while I do not believe in the death penalty, I can see why they would want revenge. What really annoyed me was the fact that the army wanted Biles executed as well. As the article states, the army "broke" him, he has PTSD and a serious brain injury from fighting, and now that they army has used all that they can from him, they want to punish him. The article suggests that he does not really know what he was doing during the massacres, or he was not in the right state of mind, and afterwards he did not remember much. While his crimes were still horrible, I do not think he would have committed them if had not been "broken" by the war.
