Redwood Bark discusses what the labels are on their bathroom signs in comparison to the labels of the teacher's bathrooms. Is this something bothering students at Tam?

I feel like this is a really well written article about the biggest non-issue ever.
#ciswhiteboyproblems? When we have so much argument right now in California about transgender students in schools having legal rights, including the ability to use the correct bathroom, this article seems almost mocking.

Also, just to put it out there
a)I don't really see how the signs on the restrooms saying girls and boy's is demeaning..
b)The majority of us aren't adults, hence we are boys and girls. Sorry. But that's how it is.
So I don't understand what is so offensive. Our teachers are in higher authorial positions than us, so if they are referred to men and women and we aren't, I don't see that as a problem.

I expected this article to be about transgender bathrooms at Redwood, something that came up repeatedly when I was writing the Tenaya feature, so I was surprised when that way more important issue, in which Redwood has taken a leading role, didn't come up at all. I understand the point being made here, but I agree with Mae that it seems a little ridiculous to provide coverage to a pretty weak viewpoint when a much more important one is so literally close at hand.

I think the author put way too much meaning into this. Most high schoolers are boys and girls, as most have not turned 18 yet. It's not "demeaning" to call a 13 or 14 year old freshman a boy instead of calling him a full grown man, its just fact.

I feel both sides of the boy-girl argument. While someone isn't legally an adult, maturity is expected of them. I think it might be more prudent if the doors said "young ladies" and "young men." I was expecting some information about transgender bathrooms as well… but there was nothing about that. Was the article a rant or an actual story?

I have actually thought that it was strange before that the bathrooms were separated using those words. I completely understand that there is a need to separate teacher's bathrooms from student's bathrooms, and I also understand that the way the administration chose to do this could be considered demeaning. However, I agree that it is not an issue worth reporting on.

While I am technically an legal adult and it seems childish to demean us by calling me a "boy" I will have to agree with the majority of the posters as this is a non issue. While in Marin we like to think we are all so politically correct we have a lot of areas to improve upon and this one being no exception. While nothing makes me more aggravated than a teacher saying a phrase such as "quite down boys" I've learned you need to pick your battles. I can let this one slide but we really need to reevaluate our dividers on the mens bathroom as well as distance between urinals...

I understand both sides of this argument, but I have to agree with most of the posts on here. It really shouldn't be that big of a deal to use a restroom labeled "boys" or "girls" instead of "men" or "women". Most students in high school are still considered boys or girls since they have not turned 18, and have not yet become an adult. I understand that they could be frustrated, but honestly what difference is it making? A bathroom is a bathroom. I also feel that this wasn't really a story but a way for the students to complain about it.

I really don't see this being an issue. I am not 18 yet, but I do not think that having to use a restroom labeled "girls" rather than "women" is very demeaning when we are at high school. Most people don't turn 18 until senior year. And even then they are not all "adults" for that long before they graduate. And as many people pointed out, the issue of transgender bathroom is a much more article-worthy issue. There is more conflict on that than whether of not we should be calling high schools girls/boys or women/men.

I understand where the writer is coming from when they say that it's a little off putting to see the more mature term versus the more childish one, but is it really that big a deal what the labeling of a bathroom is? Yes, high school is a transitioning time between childhood and adulthood, and it's sometimes difficult to figure out which one you want to be labeled as, but if the issue of a bathroom sign is really bothering people, then their priorities are a little off. When I first came to Tam and saw one door reading "Women" and one reading "Girls", of course I was confused, but I wasn't angry. I just assumed the Women's was for staff and the Girl's was for students. This article is pointless and seems to stir up an issue that was never there in the first place.

I think think this article brings up a very important topic here at high school as kids are transitioning from childhood and adulthood. However, personally I think this is slightly over exaggerated because I hardly ever notice it at Tam and I think there are more controversial bathroom subjects such as a middle male/female bathroom. Statistically, there are some students at Tam that don't qualify themselves as a boy girl man or women but yet they are still forced to decide when they go to the bathroom everyday is a very interesting topic. Good article though.

I think that Tam students may be conflicted in terms of whether to call themselves boys or men, girls or women. However I do not think that people are concerned or annoyed with bathroom stall labels. I know I'm not.
