I can see some parallels to Redwood's new policy and ours, but I don't think that we making any of these changes because Redwood is doing it. We are making homecoming this year semi-formal, and increasing the number of security guards, and we are also going to do pat downs, but we do that every year. Our changes are due to the inappropriate dancing at past dances, especially last years dance, it seems like Redwood's changes are for a similar reason. While both dances are changing, I don't people should automatically assume they won' t be fun.
I think that the changes to the Redwood dance could be necessary. I have heard crazy stories of students getting way too drunk and girls stripping practically naked. I think that in order to have the reputation of the dance changed, these policies are necessary. Making the Tam dance semi formal is trying to do the same thing, but as far as I have heard it is turning many kids away from even attending.
It's hard to judge how "excessive" these new policies are, because the article doesn't explain what the reasons were for the change. Even so, if the events of last year's dance were similar to Tam's, then the stricter changes are understandable, but not necessarily justified in all areas. Preventing underage drinking is understandable, because the school has standards of safety to uphold - however, going so far as to tell girls to button up their shirts and the like is not OK. I agree with what Georgie said about focusing on the protection of students and making sure everyone is comfortable rather than focusing on petty things like dress codes.
I agree that we probably need more information before we can say whether these changes are excessive or not, but it certainly seems like at first glance. What culture has been created at Redwood and here at Tam where 8 security guards at a high school dance is anything other than satire? Even though we don't know the administration's specific reasons for this change, it is reflective of overall trends that may be disturbing, but are important to address.
