Evidence-Based Practice in Occupational Therapy Curricula.pdf - 0 views

The purpose of this study is to describe currently used educational strategies for teaching evidence-based practice (EBP) in entry-level master's degree occupational therapy programs in the United States. Fifty-eight entry-level occupational therapy program directors completed a survey. Results showed that occupational therapy programs consistently use a wide variety of EBP resources for teaching EBP including database searches, literature reviews, and the development of a research proposal. Less commonly used strategies include the use of case stories and journal clubs. The current study provides a baseline of existing strategies taught in entry-level programs that may be built upon to gather more information about the content of EBP coursework, and determine ways to foster implementation of EBP in practice.

The Effects of a Cardiac Rehabilitation Program Tailored for Women on Global Quality o... - 0 views

Beckie, T., Beckstead, J. (2010) aimed to study was to focus on the quality of life among women in a traditional cardiac rehabilitation program compared to those completing a tailored program that included motivational interviewing of behavior changes. The study included 252 participants over that age of 21 with myocardial infarction, Angina, CABG, and PCI were studied 3 days a week for 6 months. The participants were divided into two groups. The experimental group included the tailored program and motivational interviewing and the control group used a traditional cardiac rehabilitation program. The study had multiple limitations that included all women were of one ethnicity from a single institution in southeastern U.S. Lastly, studying the efficacy of a program like this is difficult and it is unaware to know if the treatments observed would persist beyond the 6 months. The tailored group showed a positive influence on the subjects QOL. Women with CHD may be better served by first identifying the important psychological and psychosocial variables that influence QOL.

Treatment of reflex sympathetic dystrophy using the stress-loading program - 0 views

  •
This article talks about a stress-loading, also known as the "Scrub & Carry Program," beneficial for patients with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome/Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy. This program entails stressing the body part, typically a hand in hopes of the nervous system regulating the pain signals it is sending to the brain. Patients using this program will "scrub" using a brush or the Dystrophile and scrubbing foreward/backward & side-to-side, initially starting for 3 minutes at a time and gradually increasing. Then patients are to carry a weighted object, to their tolerance, in the affected hand for as much of the day as possible. We used this with a patient who had a traumatic work place amputation to his ring finger, and deep laceration (down to the bone) to his middle finger and was starting to show signs of RSD. Though he has poor compliance with this program at home, we did see some benefit from it in the clinic.

Ethical Decision-making in OT and PT - 1 views

  •
This article examines the longitudinal effects that a specific OT and PT program within a specific university affect ethical decision-making in their students. The study examined two classes of students and administered the Defining Issues Test (DIT) which according to the article is suppose to be a fairly valid measure. The test was administered on the first day of class and then in the final semester of the students coursework. The results found that the formation of ethics can be a difficult process. The study states that age is a huge factor in this process. Students over 30 years old appear to have formed and be set in their own ethical decision making process. Also, the study found that with at least this program, the students were not provided with enough coursework and instruction in ethical decision-making. The authors suggest that programs provide three to twelve weeks of instruction on ethics as opposed to the typical intermittent instruction throughout coursework. Overall, I found this to be interesting to consider. Overall, I feel that the program is set-up really well. However, I must admit that I would be curious if we had a course that was specifically aimed at ethics. Perhaps this will occur when the program moves to a doctorate degree.

Full-day preschool associated with increased readiness for kindergarten - 0 views

  •
After spending this rotation in the preschool setting, this article really resonated with me. I haven't been able to spend an entire school year with the children to witness the full extent of their progress but I have seen through videos and personal accounts just how far many of our students have come over the years at our preschool and early intervention program. Research is included in this article that indicates that children who attend a full day preschool program have increased readiness for kindergarten. This is compared to children who don't attend preschool or only attend half day programs. The article also talks about many of the benefits for children and families while having the children attend preschool programs.
