This article takes the ideas of the heart of professionalism, the mind of professionalism, and the soul of professionalism in occupational therapy was promoted for OTs & the patients we serve. Crossing the Unknown Sea: Work as a Pilgrimmage of Identity, by David Whyte observed, in order to have a firm persuasion in our work, whatever that may be, one must feel what we do is right for ourselves and the good of the world. Whyte suggested there are many dynamics that threaten to destroy every form of work and the principles it was built upon, including occupational therapy. The author suggests that in order to keep the firm persuasion of the importance of your work in OT, you must first remember where the pleasure and pride within your heart for the profession initiated. What drew you to the profession in the first place? It is common of OTs to be considered big hearted and compassionate and when in despair we need the mind of professionalism to convince ourselves that the work we do is not only right for ourselves, but the rest of the world as well. The mind of professionalism is necessary in order to progress within the profession, to make the profession as a whole better. This includes things such as EBP and implementing it, continuing education, and carrying out legitimate practice. Investing the heart, resources to modernize knowledge the profession, and the soul to balance by pushing professionals to balance responsibilities.
