Ethical dilemmas in occupational therapy and physical therapy: A survey of practitioner... - 0 views

The objective of this study was to identify ethical dilemmas experienced by OTs and PTs working in the UK National Health Service. Little is known about clinical dilemmas OTs and PTS encounter. Without case material which reflects these realities it is difficult for professional organizations to produce ethical codes, for educators to prepare students for practice, and for clinicians to benefit from the experience of others. A four-page questionnaire was designed based on the results of the pilot study and distributed to OTs and PTs in the UK NHS. Emerging themes in OT found included: difficult or dangerous behavior in patients, unprofessional or incompetent staff, lack of respect for vulnerable patients, difficult/risky decisions about patient discharge.

This article analyzes the amount and settings of ethical dilemmas from 118 OT's and 107 PT's over a 6-month period. For occupational therapists some of the dilemmas include the risky discharge of patients from hospital, resource limitations, and poor standards of care. For physical therapists these include effectiveness of therapy, conflict between the patients' wishes and professional judgment, and refusal of therapy. The article analyzes the similarities and differences between the types of dilemmas experienced between the two disciplines.

Psychosocial problems and barriers to improved diabetes management: results of the Cros... - 0 views

I thought this was an interesting study, and there are more articles about this DAWN study, but it is especially pertinent because in this rotation, I encountered many patients with uncontrolled diabetes and end stage renal failure. This article describes how psychosocial issues are frequent among patients with diabetes, and that medical professionals are not equipped to deal with the issues. Enter OT. I think this is something we could excel at.

Developing Competency in Professionalism - 0 views

  •
This PDF document defines professionalism competency as an individual's ability to align both personal and organizational conduct with ethical and professional standards in order to assume responsibility to the patient and community through providing professional level services. This column, developed by the Healthcare Leadership Alliance, outlines four key areas in order to develop competency in professionalism. The first step in achieving competency includes understanding professional roles and norms. This includes understanding both the formal and informal expectations of conduct within the field. For occupational therapists, this would include interacting with other occupational therapy practitioners as well as being actively involved in state and national occupational therapy organizations, such as AOTA and staying up to date with research and trends within the field. Secondly, an individual must be able to establish and maintain working relationships with others. Thirdly, in order to demonstrate professionalism competency an individual must be able to manage time, energy, stress, uphold ethical/professional standards, and develop a sense of personal responsibility and accountability for their work. Lastly, an individual must be able to give back to others and contribute to others growth, whether through mentorships or simply coaching others to reach their potential. Becoming competent in professionalism can be time consuming and require a great deal of dedication; however, as healthcare professionals we should always strive to achieve professionalism.
