Improved ICT infrastructure in Ghana raises data penetration | Ghana 2018 | Oxford Busi... - 0 views

  • In 2017 MTN Ghana – the local subsidiary of the South African mobile operator, and the market leader – redefined what constitutes a subscriber, removing 3.4m inactive lines from its network in the first quarter of the year. However, in the same quarter the company gained more than 800,000 new active customers. The net effect was a drop of 2.5m in its subscriber base, leaving it with 16.9m voice subscribers, according to the NCA.
  • MTN Ghana holds the largest market share. As of April 2017 it had a 56.1% share of mobile data services and 46.9% of voice. It also held 59.7% of broadband wireless access through its 4G services.
  • The firm saw revenue growth of 19.8% in 2016 on the back of its strong performance in the data segment. According to the company’s financial results, data revenue increased by 66% and accounted for 42% of total revenue in 2016 on the back of the launch of a 4G network.

  • This led to a drop in the overall mobile penetration rate in Ghana. It fell from 139% in February 2017 to 127% at the end of April. However, the country has actually seen a slight increase in the number of customers. In 2016 monthly mobile subscription growth ranged from 0.22% to 1.51%, and in March 2017 the segment was growing at a rate of 0.57%. The sluggishness is a result of the fact that the voice segment is saturated, but there is still room for expansion and building revenues in data services. Data

Egypt's fintech innovators pick up speed - 0 views

  • “Egypt needs fintech, specifically after the success story of Fawry, since our financial markets are not properly regulated at the level of payments and e-commerce – all of it is more informal, so any solutions would boom,” Sharara says.
  • MoneyFellows, an Egyptian startup incubated in London, marries technology with traditional money circles to help people save and borrow through their social networks. Like many other startups, MoneyFellows has to work with commercial banks because the Egyptian government has strict regulations about institutions that can look after customers’ deposits.

The unbanked population in Egypt has now no problem accessing financial services thanks to the many Fintech companies that emerged there. The future of the Egyptian economy looks bright.
  •
The success of Fawry in Egypt is going to inspire many other startups to opt for similar businesses. However, regulations in Egypt are still a risk. I think that the whole world is heading towards digitalization and the government regulations are going to be flexible concerning this domaine.

Fintech and the Future of Finance by James Guild :: SSRN - 0 views

  • The application of technological innovations to the finance industry (Fintech) has been attracting tens of billions of dollars in venture capital in recent years. Examples of Fintech innovations include digital cash transfer services in Kenya and India, and peer-to-peer lending platforms in China. These services, when developed in tandem with complementary government policies and regulatory frameworks, have the potential to expand financial services to hundreds of millions of people currently lacking access and to break new ground on the way finance is conducted. This is important because sustainable economic growth is strongly linked with financial inclusion. The successful adoption of Fintech to increase financial inclusion is highly dependent on competent regulatory oversight. By examining varying degrees of success in the adoption of Fintech services in Kenya, India and China this paper argues that adopting a responsive regulatory approach, rather than an overly interventionist one, is the most suitable framework for boosting financial inclusion through technological innovation.

  • PaperlessE-KYC, E-sign and stamping, and finally e-policies are making steady inroads, and with the changing mind-set, the time is not far off when insurance will be purchased instantly with no physical paper exchange. Automated claim processing and upload of documents from anywhere anytime is becoming a reality that will help in processing claims faster.Further, the proposed central repository for KYC and Digi lockers will also help all financial institutions to access the KYC records of a customer centrally as well as allow them to e-sign documents. A platform that allows you to provide your customers with all these facilities and more in a highly secure manner can make life much simpler, not to mention faster.

JUMO - Wikipedia - 0 views

  • The firm's customers are mostly unbanked merchants and individuals in emerging markets where the amount of active mobile money users is high.[8] According to Watkins-Ball, "A $20 loan that can be accessed without collateral in the middle of the night in a rural village can mean the difference between getting a sick person to hospital and going without medical care."[9] JUMO works with mobile network operators including Airtel, MTN Group and Tigo (Millicom) to make credit decisions for each loan application by drawing on non-traditional data points such as GSM records and mobile wallet transaction data. The platform leverages an unconventional digital credit model that does not require customers to have prior financial account ownership or a credit history. Loan decisions are automated and the digital credit application process happens over a mobile device with no need for in-person interactions.
