Cardio Exercises Hockey - 0 views

  •
This video is a quick feet speed exercise which helps in almost all sports.
  •
Quickness is genetically determined to a degree, but proper training can greatly increase quickness. Drills geared for pure quickness development should last 6-8 seconds. Training for quickness endurance could be longer in duration. The placement of quickness drills in training varies. Athletes are faced with a multitude of different situations when performing; therefore placement of quickness drills varies accordingly.

  • There are certain exercises and combinations of exercises that burn calories faster than others. If you only have 30 minutes to work out, walking on a treadmill is probably not the best way to burn off that box of cookies from last nigh
  • which exercises are the quickest calorie burners and the fastest routes to a healthy and fit body?
  • 1. Running
  • ...7 more annotations...
  • 2. Rowing
  • 3. Swimming
  • Not only do these three exercises burn the most calories in 30 minutes (avg. 300 for a 145 pound person), but they also build muscle and tone your entire body
  • Walking, biking and even using the elliptical trainer will not work your body as hard or as well, because those exercises target your lower body and leave your upper body hanging out and doin’ nothing.
  • If you don’t even have 30 minutes in your action-packed schedule to get to the gym, try jumping rope
  • but 10 minutes of jumping rope can burn up to 200 calories
  • It is really easy to find excuses not to work out, but try and squeeze these exercises into your day. You’ll feel better, look better, and give yourself a much needed break from catching up on all the reading you’re somehow already behind on even though it’s only the first day of class.

Healthy Diet To Tone & Strengthen Abs | LIVESTRONG.COM - 0 views

  • Oatmeal can help you stave off your hunger and take inches off of your waist. Cravings are caused by a drop in blood sugar. Oatmeal is high in fiber, which will keep you fuller longer and stave off any snack attacks or sugar cravings. Fiber also allows you digestive system to work better, ridding you of any bloating or constipation and leaving you with a firmer midsection.
  • Eggs are full of vitamins and nutrients that burn fat and build muscle. Eggs contain vitamins A, D, E and B12, which the body uses to metabolize fat. They are also a great source of protein, which the body uses to build muscle. A study at Louisiana State University found that those who ate eggs for breakfast daily lost more weight than those who ate bagels, the Quick & Simple website notes.
  • You need fat to lose weight, believe it or not. Monounsaturated fats are a good thing, and you can find them in cooking oils such as olive oil and canola oil. Good fats also help lower your cholesterol and lessen food cravings. Olive oil has also been shown to help prevent Alzheimer's disease, and to help deliver nutrients to the brain. Other foods high in monounsaturated fats include olives, avocados and almonds.

  • Nuts will help you get the abs you want by keeping you fuller longer. A study at Purdue University showed those who ate nuts felt fuller for longer periods than those who ate rice cakes, Quick & Simple reports. Don't overindulge with nuts, though, because they are high in calories and fat. The U.S. Department of Agriculture also instructs you to avoid salted nuts, because they exceed the agency's recommendations for daily sodium intake.

Healthy Indian Food Options: Quick Guide | BuiltLean.com - 0 views

  • Masala is a blend of Indian spices that adds great flavor to a dish. It’s wonderful on its own but, do pay attention as some restaurants will a lot of oil to keep flavors intense OR add cream to their sauce.
  • Makhani is a traditional meat and/or vegetable dish cooked in a tomato sauce with ghee (clarified butter) or cream. Although rich in flavor, this may not be the most waist-friendly dish
  • -Malai is a cream that is used in many Indian dishes (often sweet dishes). So, yes, this also is most likely a heavier dish.

  • Clay ovens are a large part of Indian cooking. Meat, fish, or chicken are usually marinated, spiced, and cooked to perfection. Usually, it is considered a full-flavored, lower-calorie dish
  • Naan, a favorite of many is offered in array of different flavors (even whole wheat!). One piece will make a small dent (average is around 200 calories)
  • If you have had curry sauce, you know that it is typically well-seasoned AND well-spiced. Additionally, it can also be flavored with ghee making it a heavy dish
  • Coconut milk can add a great deal of flavor and is certainly healthier than a heavy cream. However, its high fat content can make one meal the equivalent of two
  • BUT, like anything, too much of a good thing loses its value. A serving of rice is ½ cup (105 calories). The average served at a restaurant – 1 cup (210 calories)
  • Most Indian desserts are cream or milk-based. This keeps calories and fat high, unfortunately

Bodybuilding.com - 4 Easy Steps To Improve Your 10-yard Dash And 40-yard Dash. - 0 views

  • The starting stance and "set" position of the athlete is crucial. Improper form here will result in a super slow time. To begin, the athlete needs to decide which foot goes in front. A simple test is to have the athlete stand upright with both feet together. Moderately push the athlete in the back and watch which foot moves first. The foot that moves first should be their rear "quick" leg. The other leg will be called the "drive" leg or "power" leg.
  • Leg Positions.
  • For athletes shorter than 6-feet tall, place their "power" leg just millimeters from the start line. Athletes taller than 6-feet should play with their stance for the best time. Most athletes at this height place their "power" leg about 4-6 inches behind the starting line.
  • ...6 more annotations...
  • Bend the opposite knee to the ground so the front of the knee almost touches the starting line. Take the hand that is to the "quick" leg side and place it on the ground (I have seen college athletes do this backward!). Place the opposite hand near the hip so it is "cocked" and ready to "fire!"
  • A poor first step is the result of a poor stance. Having your feet too far back will result in a step that may not pass the starting line which results in one extra step to run the sprint, which could add 0.1 seconds to your time! If flexibility (addressed above) is not an issue, practicing the start from the new stance is the next step.
  • Set a hoop or line of tape on the floor to help as an aiming point. How far should the athlete step? I was pretty flexible and was able to get a large first step without sacrificing body angle.
  • The 40-yard dash is a test of acceleration and top-end speed. Research suggests that top end speed can be maintained in elite sprinters for about 2 seconds and occurs around the 50-meter mark
  • Forward Body Lean The athlete needs to keep an exaggerated forward body lean for 30 yards. The forward lean keeps the athlete from reaching full speed too fast. During this acceleration phase, the athlete should focus on keeping arms bent at about 90 degrees and focus on "pulling" the elbows back and "pushing" with the feet. Trying to "pull" back may result in a hamstring pull and also a slower time.
  • The final common mistake is that players take way too many steps. The 40-yard dash should be over in about 18-20 steps for high school players and older (If you have seen programs to reduce 40-yard time by 0.2 seconds, they take 20 strides and try to reduce ground contact time but 0.01 seconds x 20 strides = 0.2 seconds). However, counting an athlete's strides is not an easy task.

This video is a quick feet ladder exercise which will improve agility.
  •
For the average trained athlete the quickest way to increase linear speed is through short sprints with full recovery (5-50m for team sport athletes) and improving technique. Weight training (via improving relative body strength i.e. strength/bodyweight) will help improve speed. Without sprinting it will not have much of an impact on increasing your speed. The same goes for leaping and bounding plyometric drills and improving flexibility and mobility.

Speed Enhancement Drills For Soccer | LIVESTRONG.COM - 0 views

  • Soccer is a game of many elements including strength, coordination, discipline, communication and speed. The ability to utilize explosive speed on the soccer field sets the best teams apart from everyone else.
  • An alternate start is a sprinting drill that requires you to run 10 to 20 yards at a time. It is designed to improve your explosive speed from different positions and actions that more closely mimic a soccer game.
  • A speed ladder is a piece of training equipment that you lay on the ground and run through to develop foot speed and coordination. The ladder is laid out over a short distance and consists of small squares that you must step in on each stride.
  • ...3 more annotations...
  • Adding resistance to your sprints helps build takeoff power in your legs for explosive speed down the field. You can add resistance by sprinting up a hill of about 30 degrees, or by using speed parachutes that follow behind you as you run. Parachutes are effective, but not always practical if you are training as a team.
  • Building speed for the defensive part of soccer is just as important as speed for offense. Practice sprinting backwards for short distances, using quick turns and crossovers along the way. This drill simulates an offensive player trying to dribble past you and will help you keep up during a game.

This is a good source because it ties in with soccer. I incorporate many of these tactics in my routine. We also do many of these drills at practice. I think overall my speed has increased

Lack of sleep can make you sick - 0 views

  • An extra hour or two of sleep seems so ... optional. Yet, lack of sleep is implicated in obesity, poor heart health and mental illness.

  • Students, workaholics, hassled parents and diehard partiers listen up -- a single all-nighter or a week of four or five hours sleep per night impairs your mental and physical performance as if you had a blood alcohol level of about 0.1, over the legal limit of 0.08 for driving in British Columbia.

How Much Protein And Carbs Should You Eat Before Workout? | LIVESTRONG.COM - 0 views

  • If your workout is the key to your dream physique, then your diet is the key to your most effective workout. The food you eat is directly tied to the way your body performs, and an under-performing body won't burn as many calories or build as much muscle as one that is perfectly fueled.
  • the most important factor is the mix of carbohydrates and protein.
  • No matter what volume of food you consume, dietitian Christopher Mohr recommends 5 g of carbs for every 1 g of essential amino acids -- about 1.6 g of a complete protein will provide 1 g of essential amino acids. Consuming these nutrients before your workout allows your body to take advantage of workout-induced increased blood flow to establish the amino acids in your muscles while boosting blood sugar for steady energy.
  • ...10 more annotations...
  • Whatever you decide to eat, keep the 5:1.6 g carb-to-protein ratio in mind.
  • Obviously, the closer you get to your workout time, the smaller the meal should be
  • Many protein shakes and sports bars are designed specifically as pre-workout nutrition and have the precise nutrient ratio you need. They also have the added advantage of being portable, which can be convenient for those who hit the gym on the way home from work.
  • If you are stuck without your favorite supplement at hand, fat-free chocolate milk will suffice -- according to Mohr, it provides the exact carb-to-protein ratio as a pre-workout shake. The fat-free part is important though -- fat digests slowly and can weigh you down when you least need it.
  • Supplements are simply convenience products, and are not necessary to good nutrition. You can get the same benefit from whole foods, but this requires more planning and label reading. Fat-free yogurt with fruit and granola works, as does a whole-grain bagel with peanut butter.
  • Timing is important -- even the perfect meal can leave you flat if you eat it too early or weigh you down if you eat it too late
  • The actual amount of carbs and protein you eat depends upon how much time will elapse before your workout.
  • f your only pre-workout nutrition is a regular meal, eat it about three or four hours before you exercise so the food has time to digest. Otherwise, your full stomach will be susceptible to upset, and the nutrients won't be available in your bloodstream when your body needs them. Smaller meals can be eaten two or three hours prior, but stick to a small snack if you only have an hour to go.
  • Supplements are by far the easiest way to ensure you get the proper ratio in an appropriately-sized food source.
  • For a larger meal, a turkey sandwich on whole grain bread with lettuce and tomato is a nearly perfect pre-workout meal, and bananas or fruit juice can be a last-minute snack for quick energy.

Bodybuilding.com - The Best Time To Take Your Supplements. - 0 views

  • Creatine - Learn More Best taken 1/2 hour or so BEFORE a workout and again RIGHT after a workout. What I do is take a creatine/juice/protein drink about a half hour before a workout and than another shake right after. This "bracketing" technique helps set up an anabolic (muscle-building) state for your muscles and helps prevent muscle breakdown from a workout (catabolism). Other than these 2 opportune times, you can add another creatine serving or two any time throughout the day. I usually recommend 25 to 30 grams of creatine on a loading phase and 10-20 grams a day on a maintenance phase.
  • Glutamine - Learn More Definitely take glutamine right before bed. This is where the overwhelming research shows the value of glutamine raising growth hormone levels significantly by taking 5 grams before bed. Also, another great time is upon waking, when your muscles have been without significant nutrition for up to 6-8 hours. Another good time for glutamine is about a half hour or hour after working out. This helps in the recovery/recuperation process from demanding workouts. So, creatine definitely before and after your workout and glutamine right before bed and right upon waking.
  • The best times to take ANY protein drink or protein supplements are as follows. I've listed them in order of importance, so based upon what you can afford, start at the top of the list and work down. When Should You Take It? The most important time is right after a workout. Your muscles are like a sponge and need instant nutrition for muscle recovery and growth. Right before bed. You're about to sleep for 6 to 8 hours. That's a long time without protein. Could you imagine going throughout your day (when awake) not eating 6 to 8 hours? Right before bed is important. Right upon waking. Same thing, you've just gone 6 to 8 hours without proper nutrition. Your body needs protein quick. Half hour before a workout. This sets up the "anabolic window" before your workout and provides your muscles with adequate nutrition so that the effects of weight training (weight training breaks down muscle-called catabolic) are not as severe.

Bodybuilding.com - Top 5 Reasons To Use Creatine: Get The Results You're Looking For Qu... - 0 views

  • With all the different supplements that are available for use, many people have a tendency to get confused on which they should take. In some cases there will be one or two supplements in particular that will stand out to you and draw your attention.
  • One supplement to take, that often tops the list of many people, is creatine. Let's have a quick look at the top five reasons why you should consider taking creatine.
  • Why Should You Consider Taking Creatine?
  • ...20 more annotations...
  • . Increased Workout Intensity Translates To More Muscle Mass
  • One of the first reasons why you need to start taking creatine is because it will help to increase your overall workout intensity, which means you will achieve a higher level of muscle mass.
  • The creatine will allow you to keep pushing hard in the gym at a time when you would have previously had to decrease the load or stop entirely, so this helps in terms of building muscle faster.
  • Better Muscular Contraction Means Enhanced Sports Performance:
  • The second reason to take creatine is for athletic performance. If you're involved in sports that require stop and go type of activity, creatine is going to come in very helpful for you.
  • To put this into perspective, a player in a game of hockey taking creatine would not only be able to go harder with each shift he's on the ice, but he'll be able to last through more shifts total throughout the game.
  • Quicker Atp Re-Synthesis Equates To Frequent Training Sessions:
  • Third, creatine is going to allow you to train at a higher frequency, which also means quicker and more significant muscular gains.
  • The more frequent you are able to stimulate a muscle, the faster it will grow bigger, provided that it has had the opportunity to fully grow back after the first stress load that was placed upon it.
  • Since creatine helps increase the recovery rate of the muscle cells, this means you may not require as much total rest time in between each workout you perform.
  • So if you're someone who commonly takes a few days off between each full body workout, using creatine may allow you to cut this down to just a single day between workouts. Over time this will translate to more workouts and will make a difference on your results from month to month.
  • Higher Glycogen Levels Generates Huge Muscle Pumps:
  • Fourth on our list of reasons why you need to use creatine is because of the muscle pumps you'll get. While muscle pumps don't necessarily help you out physiologically in terms of building muscle mass, they will help with motivational levels.
  • There's nothing like seeing a muscle grow at the end of a workout to motivate you to get back into the gym and do it again a day or two later, and since creatine causes a higher level of water retention in the body, the muscle pumps you'll experience will go up.
  • Faster Sprint Performance Increases Metabolic Rates And Fat Loss:
  • Finally, the last reason why you should consider investing in creatine as one of the muscle-building supplements you use is because it'll help you increase your metabolic rate.
  • If you're currently looking for fat loss, how many calories you burn on a daily basis will have a significant impact on how quickly you see progress.
  • Since sprint cardio training is one of the best ways to boost your metabolic rate and sprinting relies strictly on ATP as a fuel source, supplementing with creatine allows you to have a better sprint performance during your weight loss phase.
  • If you do make the decision to utilize creatine with your training program also remember to perform the loading phase first as this will be critical to getting the muscle cells fully saturated right from the start and allowing you to see the biggest benefits from taking the supplement.
