      I don't particularly like the idea of having the students write an innaugural address as if they are President Lincoln, mainly because the scope seems too narrow for me. Rather than focusing on what it was like to be Lincoln, the lesson should focus on what is going on in the country. Nevertheless, I appreciate the lesson plan's attempts to have students interact with the history be taught.

      I think that along with his lack of triumphalism, Lincoln's scathing indictment of the institution of slavery should also be noticed by students. This speech, combine with his Gettysburg Address shows Lincoln's thought (changing thoughts?) and slavery and african American and would be interesting for the students to explore.

    I absolutely love the UNESCO World Heritage Center website because it offers thousands of ideas for out-of-class exploration of cultural sites. All you have to do is click on the World Heritage List and scroll to your country's list of locations. You can visit most of these sites free of charge and they offer tours and kid-friendly information on the site. This site could also be used as a way to formulate upper-level discussion about what culture is and who gets to decide what cultures (and what parts of a specific culture) are worth saving.

  • “What Can You Get By Warre”: Powhatan Exchanges Views With Captain John Smith, 1608" Captain John Smith was a soldier and adventurer in Europe and Asia before he became involved in the Virginia Company’s plan to establish a settlement in North America. He was aboard one of the three ships that reached Virginia in April 1607. The first settlers, ill prepared for life in the harsh environment, had few useful skills but great expectations of easy profits. They suffered from disease, malnutrition, and frequent attacks by Indians in the early years; over one half died the first winter. Smith took over Jamestown’s government amid this chaos and death; he explored the region and traded for desperately needed supplies with the Indians. Smith recognized the need to establish peaceful relations with the powerful Powhatan Indians of the coastal region, and he traded English manufactured goods for much needed Indian corn. Smith recounted this exchange with the Indian leader Powhatan in his 1624 Historyie.

      This site could be used by teachers as a baseline, to discover their own prejudices and learn hwo to avoid them BEFORE teaching their class. There are many different "quizzes" on the site which claim to measure your level of prejudice/knowledge of it. Then they offer links about how to deal with these issues in the classroom. This site is a good way for teachers to start thinking about these issues, and is a good resource of some of these issues come up in a classroom and he or she does not know how to deal with it.

      This site is valuable because it gets teachers to consider the issue of pejudice in the classroom and offers them resources on dealing with this tricky issue. Because the site does not have lesson plans, per se, it could not be used for daily lessons in the class. However, the teacher could have the students look through the website and take some of the quizzes, and use this as a launching point for a discussion of these issues in his or her class. Therefore, this site could be an incredible valuable tool to teachers as a resource and as jumping-off point for a discussion on prejudice and other related issues.

      I found this information about Thomas Schelling's research to be very fascinating, I had never heard of it before. I would like to explore this idea more, that small incentives can lead to massive segregation.

      The site relies on state of the art technology and satellite imaging. Students get a fantastic look at places in 3D, so that locations are not just places that students have to imagine but they can visit. It is really useful to teachers because they can pull up this information in class. The site is also useful for geographical concepts because students can see terrain and topography.

    Google Earth is a fantastic way to take students to any country in the world! As long as you have a computer and a projector, students can have amazing images of different countries. They also have features to help you study topography and maps.

      The "Resources" page is the UN trying to be kid friendly. They have "student" versions of various treaties (and things) and UN Publications for download or order. If you were studying a specific international treaty or event the student versions contained here might be helpful (or you could go to the primary documents). I think it'd be better to have your students CREATE student versions of these documents than to use these, but there are some videos and some links that are helpful. The global map is outdated and slow. There are better maps elsewhere.

    I observed my cooperating teacher using this site (Census in Schools) for a 6th grade geography class. The students responded positively and were actively engaged in the lesson. The students were able to work with their own individual maps while exploring and answering essential questions. The site also has information and materials appropriate for all other grades. I think that this site could also be used for U.S. History since the first census orginiated for the purpose of creating a representative government.

  • There has been growing concern about how best to meet the educational challenge of learner diversity. Some researchers (National, 1991) have raised questions about the efficacy of teacher education programs which attempt to deal with learner diversity and which explore changes in prospective teachers' roles in modifying instruction. However, other researchers (i.e., Banks & Banks, 1989; Bennett, 1990; Sleeter & Grant, 1988) have recommended that the following be included within the teacher education curriculum: At least one course in multicultural education that takes into consideration the needs of all students Information about the history and culture of students from a wide number of ethnic, racial, linguistic, and cultural backgrounds Content about the contributions made by various groups Information about first- and second-language acquisition and effective teaching practices for working with students from limited English proficient (LEP) backgrounds Field experiences and student teaching opportunities with students from varying backgrounds
  • This background is important for the teacher to have in order to understand the rights and responsibilities of students as well as of teachers and parents. While having this information may not eliminate the stereotypes or misconceptions that teachers have about groups, it can serve to inform more directly future instructional decisions which they will make.

    I discovered this website while looking for information on Chinese and Japanese immigration. This website supports the newspaper Harper's Weekly that was published from 1857 to 1912. The publication reported on the relevant issues of the day such as immigration, slavery and presidential elections. Not only do they have the actual papers in their archive, they also provide summaries of some of the articles. There is a section dedicated to Immigration and Ethnic America. While there is a great deal of information on the site that is fee to all, one must subscribe to gain access to the entire site. The site also provides links to many other websites that support learning such as lessons, activities, and games. Some of their links are oriented around subjects that were relevant during the time the papers were published. There is also a featured "cartoon" of the day that is taken from the period of 1857 to 1912. It is a great resource for teachers!
