The (Lack Of) Clarity In Facebook's New 20 Percent Text Rule - 1 views

  • The rule does NOT apply to standard images you upload to your page, but only images you promote in the newsfeed Thumbnail images for videos or links that you promote in the newsfeed as ads are subject to the 20% rule As of this week, announced in a tiny update on Facebook’s Developer Blog, the rule applies to application icons (which includes timeline tab images too) ***UPDATE***: Facebook reps have indicated that the text rule does NOT apply to the thumbnail icons, but they still recommend using images with little to no text.
  • Product shots (i.e. real life photos of a product) do not count against the rule. This means name tags, stop signs, text on the actual product, etc. – that’s all good to go and does not count towards your 20% text allotment “Tune-in” images for TV shows or movies have leeway as the title of the show/feature, the tune-in info, and the names of the actors and actresses involved do NOT count towards the 20%

Experience: The Blog: Six Potential Adverse Consequences of Facebook's fMC Advertising ... - 0 views

  • Brands may not adopt Facebook's new ad media in large numbers: It seems unlikely, but it is possible that marketers are just not prepared for the dynamic new ad model Facebook has unveiled.
  • FTC pushes for much more obvious disclosure of sponsored ads in users' newsfeeds: Allowing marketers to turn their posts into ads within the newsfeed is not new--Twitter is already doing the same thing with Promoted Tweets--but is the fact these are paid ads obvious enough to users? The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has a longstanding standard that people must recognize ads as such and cannot be duped into thinking advertising is content.
  • "MySpace felt a lot of pressure to monetize quickly after it was sold to News Corp. And I think as result, they added advertising, they added things we might consider to be spammy, things users found intrusive."

  • Brands may demand powerful ways to unfriend fans: Many brands accumulated "friends" with little to no relationship with the brand.

Forrester: 'Facebook is Failing Marketers' | LinkedIn - 0 views

  • I am surprised it has taken this long for Forrester to attack the performance of Facebook. It is something we have seen developing for years. The challenge is the space has evolved making it less and less relevant for brands in the eyes of the Consumer. The shift to mobile has made Facebook pages virtually obsolete. People very infrequently drift outside of their newsfeed on mobile devices.
  • One recent study of sweepstakes found that only 11.8% of participants shared the Facebook app with others. In the past that number was well over 50%. You add to that the way Facebook shares content (known as the Facebook algorithm or Edgerank) only 5-15% of their friends would even have the potential to see it in their newsfeed

Facebook Algorithm Tweaks Hurt Viral Sites' Organic Reach More Than Other Publishers | ... - 0 views

  • Facebook confirmed to Adweek that there were changes made in how things were ranked in Newsfeeds. It said the the tweaks were made to customize the experience for the Facebook user.
  • But, an anonymous source “professionally familiar with Facebook’s marketing strategy” claimed the contrary in comments to Valleywag, saying the social media mammoth made the modifications in order to get organizations to spend advertising dollars. Instead of using free brand pages, publishers would be forced to buy Facebook ads to tap into referral traffic.

NBC Is First TV Network to Buy Facebook Video Ads (EXCLUSIVE) | Variety - 0 views

  • For Facebook, the new Premium Video Ads are an attempt to capture TV-size ad dollars with the lure of offering targeting capabilities — as well as reach — that television can’t match.
  • The video ads “autoplay” when a Facebook user scrolls through his or her newsfeed, but the sound is muted by default. As with any new form of advertising, the approach risks irritating users: NBC’s promos have already garnered a few negative comments (“Why can’t I get this crap off my timeline,” one commenter said) but generally reaction has been favorable.
  • Beatty said NBC will evaluate the effectiveness of the Facebook video ads in the short term on engagement and metrics like number of shares.

Twitter Puts the Timeline on Notice and Hints of Group Chats - Digits - WSJ - 0 views

  • the need for “an algorithm that delivers the depth and breadth of the content we have on a specific topic and then eventually as it relates to people,” he added.
  • This is related to Twitter’s larger aim to better organize its content—to separate the interesting and timely tweets from the noise. Twitter has already begun tweaking the timeline where tweets appear—most notably (and controversially), by introducing tweets from accounts users haven’t chosen to follow.
  • Costolo said that the favorited tweets by other users show up when the user pulls to refresh their timelines twice and Twitter has no new content to show both times.

  • “Individual users are not going to wake up one day and find their timeline completely ranked by an algorithm.”
  • Noto suggested direct messaging might become more social.

Why the News Feed is Becoming Less Important for Facebook Pages - 0 views

  • as Page reach and engagement continues to dip for brands, Facebook has made some updates to help deliver value to businesses through Pages beyond just News Feed distribution.
  • Facebook Page is becoming more like a website for your business — a destination people will come to when they want information, or even make a purchase or booking, as well as a place to engage with great content.
  • Facebook has made it easier for people to recommend your business by bringing Recommendations to your Page. As shared by Facebook: People will now be able to post a Recommendation for your business including text, photos and tags directly on your Page. And Recommendations will also help you reach people while they’re searching for or talking about your business.

  • Actions A suite of action buttons are now featured prominently near the top of Pages. These buttons enable people to take actions like book an appointment for a haircut, order a pizza, send a message or write a Recommendation.
  • More visibility for stories Since launching stories in 2017, Facebook has been experimenting with ways to make it easier for people to engage with your story and with this update, people can view your business story by tapping on the Page profile photo.
  • Events ticket sales 700 million people use Facebook Events each month and now businesses will be able to sell tickets directly through Facebook Pages. Facebook is also creating event-specific ads to help with promotion and marketing.
