" Web 2.0 (as presented in a Flowgram) January 17, 2009 by Paul Hamilton One of the many powerful and impressive resources waiting in the "cue" for me to test and write about is Flowgram. As I was exploring possibilities, I came across one of the very best overviews I've seen to date about the Read-Write Web. So today, I'm simply going to embed this marvelous example of a Flowgram. My post about the application will have to wait for another day. Thanks to M. Seifman of Miami Valley Career Technology Center for this excellent presentation. If you wish to view a full screen version of the flowgram, click on the large blue button marked "Player" in the bottom right corner. AddThis Posted in 1 | Tagged flowgram, M. Seifman, Miami Valley Career Technology Center, Read-Write Web, Web 2.0 | 2 Comments » SqoolTube (Online Resource) January 14, 2009 by Paul Hamilton Youtube has become a vast treasure trove of engaging resources that can be used to great effect in the classroom. There are two major challenges, however, when it comes to using these resources. The first challenge is the time-consuming task of finding exactly what you need. The second challenge arises from the sad reality that Youtube is actually blocked in far too many schools. Here's a resource that helps on both counts. SqoolTube has searched and catalogued an extremely valuable collection of Youtube videos that support learning at the elementary or primary school level (K-8). These videos are then passed along from the SqoolTube URL, so unless a school or school district is excessively restrictive, it is unlikely that these videos will be blocked. Videos are categorized by subject area (math, music, reading & communication, safety, science, science, Spanish, social studies). There are also three other headings: Book-Related; Early Childhood; Holidays. I especially like some of the video versions of children's books that are available." comment by Paul Hamilton

good site for demonstrating online Inquiry in a data base
  •
from the University of Michigan Museum of Zoology. Animal Diversity Web (ADW) is an online database of animal natural history, distribution, classification, and conservation biology at the University of Michigan Animal Diversity Web Has * Thousands of species accounts about individual animal species. These may include text, pictures of living animals, photographs and movies of specimens, and/or recordings of sounds. Students write the text of these accounts and we cannot guarantee their accuracy. * Descriptions of levels of organization above the species level, especially phyla, classes, and in some cases, orders and families. Hundreds of hyperlinked pages and images illustrate the traits and general biology of these groups. Professional biologists prepare this part. Animal Diversity Web Is An Online Encyclopedia. ADW is a large searchable encyclopedia of the natural history of animals. Every day, thousands of classroom students and informal visitors use it to answer animal questions. Other sites specialize in local, endangered, or particular kinds of animals. We aim to be as comprehensive as possible. A Science Learning Tool. ADW facilitates inquiry-driven learning, that is, teaching about science by leading students to use the methods of science. Our large database is structured, providing consistent information for all species to foster comparisons. An advanced search tool allows a user to call up species accounts fitting any combination of descriptors. Students can explore for patterns and relationships, learn how to frame and answer scientific questions and, with the help of a good teacher, experience the excitement and satisfaction of doing science. Our long-term goal is to create a database rich enough that students can discover for themselves basic concepts in ecology and conservation biology.

Are you ready to play five card flickr? - 2 views

  •
Five Card Flickr "This quasi experimental web site is designed to foster visual thinking. It is based completely, or more loosely... copied, from the Five Card Nancy game devised by comics guru Scott McCloud and the nifty web version at 741.5 Comics. However, rather than drawing from a hand of randomly chosen panels of the nancy comic, my version draws upon collections of photos. You are dealt five random photos for each draw, and your task is to select one each time to add to a selextion of images, that taken together as a final set of 5 images- tell a story in pictures. When you are done, you the option to save the story so you can put a link in your resume or send to your Mom (she pay print it out and tape it to the fridge, or she may criticize your creativity, your mileage and mom may vary)."

Again, the mission is not to review or try every single one (that would be madness, I know), but pick one that sounds interesting and see if you can produce something. I have used each tool to produce an example of Dominoe story and links are provided, where available, to examples by other people. Please share your own examples or thoughts in the discussion area of this wiki.

"In order to make this "The Best…" list, the first kind of map-making site I described must be easy to use, allow any image to be inserted quickly from the Web (except for one), and host the completed map with a link and/or allow the map to be embedded. For the second kind, the site must be easy to use and have a fair amount of data already available to users of the site."

Readable App: read the web - 0 views

  •
Readable is an application that helps you read more of the web. "Users with any browser can head to the bookmarklet's setup page, choose a few reading options, then drag a "Readable" link onto their bookmarks/links toolbar. The major difference with Readability, other than the voluminous font, size, and layout options, is that a readable text scroll appears as an overlay that greys out the rest of the page. It can auto-grab the main reading text off a page, or you can select the text you want to read and hit the bookmarklet."
