Readable App: read the web - 0 views

  •
Readable is an application that helps you read more of the web. "Users with any browser can head to the bookmarklet's setup page, choose a few reading options, then drag a "Readable" link onto their bookmarks/links toolbar. The major difference with Readability, other than the voluminous font, size, and layout options, is that a readable text scroll appears as an overlay that greys out the rest of the page. It can auto-grab the main reading text off a page, or you can select the text you want to read and hit the bookmarklet."

" Web 2.0 (as presented in a Flowgram) January 17, 2009 by Paul Hamilton One of the many powerful and impressive resources waiting in the "cue" for me to test and write about is Flowgram. As I was exploring possibilities, I came across one of the very best overviews I've seen to date about the Read-Write Web. So today, I'm simply going to embed this marvelous example of a Flowgram. My post about the application will have to wait for another day. Thanks to M. Seifman of Miami Valley Career Technology Center for this excellent presentation. If you wish to view a full screen version of the flowgram, click on the large blue button marked "Player" in the bottom right corner. AddThis Posted in 1 | Tagged flowgram, M. Seifman, Miami Valley Career Technology Center, Read-Write Web, Web 2.0 | 2 Comments » SqoolTube (Online Resource) January 14, 2009 by Paul Hamilton Youtube has become a vast treasure trove of engaging resources that can be used to great effect in the classroom. There are two major challenges, however, when it comes to using these resources. The first challenge is the time-consuming task of finding exactly what you need. The second challenge arises from the sad reality that Youtube is actually blocked in far too many schools. Here's a resource that helps on both counts. SqoolTube has searched and catalogued an extremely valuable collection of Youtube videos that support learning at the elementary or primary school level (K-8). These videos are then passed along from the SqoolTube URL, so unless a school or school district is excessively restrictive, it is unlikely that these videos will be blocked. Videos are categorized by subject area (math, music, reading & communication, safety, science, science, Spanish, social studies). There are also three other headings: Book-Related; Early Childhood; Holidays. I especially like some of the video versions of children's books that are available." comment by Paul Hamilton

WAIT - 0 views

  •
Fellow Educators, I am the deputy director of eduction at the Taubman Museum of Art located in Roanoke, VA (see http://taubmanmuseum.org). I have designed, and we have recently had created, a Web-based Art Interactive Tool (WAIT) that allows users to interact with works in our permanent collection in a unique manner. Using a scaffolding interpretive model that I also designed (REED-LO), users, through WAIT, formulate an interpretation of a work of art in our collection. WAIT provides the user with guiding questions and allows users to record their thoughts online - in the end, they publish their overall interpretation of the work of art online. Teachers can create, for free, "classrooms" through WAIT that includes all of their students. They can then assign a specific work of art to their students. The students then access the work using a unique username and password. After they publish their interpretations, the teacher can approve each interpretation which then allows the students to access what their peers wrote about the work of art as well as the "expert" essay related to the work. In essence WAIT allows users to formulate a personal meaning of a work of art before reading what others have written about the work. WAIT can be found both through the Taubman Museum of Art's website, under the "Learn" section, or by going to www.waitarttool.com - it is free to use. I was hoping some of you would check out WAIT and discuss your thoughts about the tool through this forum. Be aware, however, there are some minor bugs that we are working through - but for the most part it is working fine.

Rare Book Room - 0 views

  •
The "Rare Book Room" site has been constructed as an educational site intended to allow the visitor to examine and read some of the great books of the world. Over the last decade, a company called "Octavo" digitally photographed some of the world 's great books from some of the greatest libraries. These books were photographed at very high resolution (in some cases at over 200 megabytes per page). This site contains all of the books (about 400) that have been digitized to date. These range over a wide variety of topics and rarity. The books are presented so that the viewer can examine all the pages in medium to medium-high resolution. Some highlights of the site are: Shakespeare, Ben Franklin, Pierre-Joseph Redouté, Books of hours, Galileo, Copernicus, Louis Renard
