Good discussion on chronic traumatic encephalopathy. CTE is a condition found in the military and sports related head trauma. This is usually the result of low, repetitive impact injuries to the brain. Though, genetic susceptibility is discussed as well.

Scientific American article from 2013 highlights the link between head trauma and pituitary dysfunction.

Progesterone useful in inflammation reduction in Traumatic Brain Injuries.  This applies to both sexes.

Progesterone has a neuroprotective and promyelinating effects in the nervous system.  Progesterone increases BDNF.  Progesterone increases proliferation and differentiation of oligodendrocyte progenitor cells which will increase myelin production.

DHA shown to protect against post stroke inflammation and injury.  This has implications on any head injury.

Prevalence of mild Traumatic Brain Injury was found to be 9.5% in returning US soldiers.  This was associated with PTSD and Etoh abuse.

Good discussion and review of progesterone's role as neuroprotective in TBI.

multiple concussions result in hypopituitarism in 14 year old young man.

One of the first studies to look at PCS found that 42% of soldiers produced abnormally low hormone production following TBI one year after the injury.  This study highlights the potential pituitary dysfunction that can result from TBI.

Progesterone and its metabolite allopregnanolone show promise in protecting the brain in TBI.
