This Youtube video is an OT in a cancer treatmen facility. She is sharing advice and tips for helping cancer patients with fatigue. The most common symptom of cancer is fatigue. I thought this would be good information to know as COTAs.

Oh my! This is a youtube video on a skin grafting technique. I was curious how they do skin grafting. I found out! This video made my stomach, toes, and my whole body clinch up watching it! If you can handle it, it's interesting.

watch this short video on classification and treatment of burns. This just reinforces what we are studying in Physical Disabilities right now. I thought this video had really good images of the layers of the skin as well as images of burns on the skin.

This Youtube video may seem a little scary. I google searched toxic epidermal necrolysis to see what it looked like to share and this was one of the videos to come up. It is Steven Johnson Sydnrome which can result in toxi epidermal necrolysis. Seems a little frightening hearing the causes, but it this syndrome happens to 1 in a million. Interesting video about this syndrome and information that is good to know for working in the healthcare field.

Just my style! What a great article! This article talks about the great benefits of knitting and what knitting does to keep your hands healthy by way of function. It's a great workout for your hands, fingers and forearms, but not a strenuous workout. Knitting also is a stress relief activity, can improve your mood, relieves anxiety and depression. I have not tried knitting. I have always cross-stitched. I can tell you, when I finish school, this is definitely on my bucket list, along with learning to paint!

This article talks about the four most common upper extremity injuries. They are hand or wrist fractures, hand or wrist sprains, chronic pain, reoccurring acute injuries. I have not had any upper extremity injuries that I can recall, but I'm sure I will some time in my life time. I have had friends to have carpel tunnel and had surgery for it and they still have issues with it, even after the surgery. I seen several severely injured hands in my first semester of clinicals at an outpatient rehab. Not a pretty sight. Hand injuries and other upper extremity injuries happen to all ages and can be the most inconvenient injuries.

This was a very interesting article I read regarding a mind controlled bionic leg. The article is from 2013. It stated that there has been mind controlled bionic arms available for a while now. To date, only one man is testing the mind controlled bionic leg. He says he can walk, go up steps, etc just by thinking about the action taken. There is a very short video of him walking with it. Pretty amazing!

I thought this was a very informative article regarding hip replacement surgery. The article lists reasons for a hip replacement surgery. The article goes into a fair amount of information about the surgery itself. What to expect after surgery, complications that may arise and how to care for yourself after the surgery. The article has pictures, and because I am a visual learner, I liked the pictures.

This was a good article to read about active aging. Active aging is continuing to participate socially, with families and friends, spiritual, economic affairs, etc. Being active as we age can help extend our life expectancy and quality of life. This article was a good reminder to me to stay active in my community, with my family, church family and friends as I age so as not to isolate myself as I grow older.

Does LIfe End at 35? I say not! I enjoyed reading this article about a man who said his career didn't even take off until he was 58. He accomplished many great things later in his life vs earlier in his life. I think people, and I am speaking for myself get hung up on age. I worry too much about my age and what I have not accomplished at my age. This article brought to my attention that age is just a number! You can accomplish many great things at any age!

This article was an eye opener for me regarding the hazards of sitting too long and not using proper sitting techniques. I now know now why I have mushy abs and limp glutes! I sit for hours at my computer without taking a break, resting or stretching. I also do not sit in an ergonomic position while at my desk. From this article I gained a great deal of information about how sitting too long can contribute to heart disease, over-productive pancreas, colon cancer, poor circulation in legs, foggy brain, bad back, strained neck, disk damage, mushy abs and limp glutes, just to name a few. It was really surprising to learn how just from sitting too long can create havoc on your organs, muscles and your whole body. Gives you something to think about!

I am sharing this article as a reminder of how important bone health is. This article shares information about how much calcium adults and children need and the importance of calcium and other vitamins and minerals for healthy bones. Eating healthy and exercise is essential in promoting healthy bones. We as COTA's will be treating clients of all ages and I feel it is necessary for us to understnd and educate when we can on bone health. Understanding a lifestyle of eating healthy and knowing what damages our bones is important. Education and being proactive on bone health may prevent us and our clients from distress in our future.
