The health hazards of sitting - The Washington Post - 9 views

  •
This article was an eye opener for me regarding the hazards of sitting too long and not using proper sitting techniques. I now know now why I have mushy abs and limp glutes! I sit for hours at my computer without taking a break, resting or stretching. I also do not sit in an ergonomic position while at my desk. From this article I gained a great deal of information about how sitting too long can contribute to heart disease, over-productive pancreas, colon cancer, poor circulation in legs, foggy brain, bad back, strained neck, disk damage, mushy abs and limp glutes, just to name a few. It was really surprising to learn how just from sitting too long can create havoc on your organs, muscles and your whole body. Gives you something to think about!

Planning on Prosthetics - 0 views

I know I keep posting little kids with prosthetics but they are so inspirational. In class yesterday, Teri was talking about "fit to sit" meaning that the best time to introduce a child to a prosthetic device is when they are around 6 months old (when they begin sitting unsupported and are involving their hands to reach). This short video is a great example of a family who did this with their daughter. She is very active and doesn't let her missing arm affect her life.

How to Improve Your Posture - 7 views

  •
"Good posture is an easy and very important way to maintain a healthy mind and body". I know that many of us could improve our posture when we are sitting at a desk or in a car, or standing, walking, and everything else. So, I found this article and it tells us how to get a better posture not only by standing straight, but strengthening your core muscles and training them to actually do the work. I had always thought it was about how you stand and sit, but it isn't and it makes sense now. Plus, if you are having headaches or back pain, this article might be something to consider reading because getting a better posture can help with that!

You Are Not Alone. - 0 views

I found this really neat resource for individuals going through the cancer process. This program is for the patients at Columbia - Presbyterian Medical Center who are going through cancer treatments and the volunteers of this program will comfort them, provide them with information, or just sit with them when they are getting their treatment just to pass the time. All of the volunteers have had cancer so they understand the different aspects that it entails. This would be a great idea for other hospitals to implement.

hemiarthroplasty - 3 views

This PDF gives information on the procedure of hemiarthroplasty to repair a fractured hip, as well as, great visual pictures of the body positioning during ADL's for hip precautions. I thought it would be helpful for someone like me, as an OTA student to visualize the correct preventative positioning during sitting, lying, driving, bathing, etc.

This is an article on the stand up desk Teri mentioned in class the other day. My fiancés place of work is giving the employees the option of having one of these as well and he opted to try it out. He says he can tell a difference in back pain when he stands vs. sitting, I assume it is because he is using better posture while standing. Since it was mentioned in class and he is using it I wanted to see if I could find other benefits to using a stand up desk while at work. I found this article explaining more benefits of using the stand up desk and I found it to be a very interesting read, and wishing I would have had this option at my desk job before I started school.

Evaluation of the Effect of Energy Conservation Techniques in the Performance of Activi... - 1 views

  •
This study explores how effective energy conservation techniques are for three tasks: shopping for groceries with a grocery bag vs. a shopping cart, washing clothes while standing vs. sitting, and hanging clothes to dry at shoulder height vs. waist height. The subjects were divided by age; one group was 60 or < and the other group was over 60. Read this article to find out why two of the EC techniques benefited only the younger group. This study raises interesting questions about considering clients' contexts before suggesting EC techniques.

New Device Makes Wheelchairs Obsolete - 0 views

  •
I'm not sure that I agree with the title of this video, but the TEK Robotic Mobilization Device is a major improvement, in many ways, over a wheelchair. This segment gives 4 reasons why the TEK Robotic demonstrates a major shift in thinking in mobility devices. Best of all, this device shows how an individual with SCI can both sit and stand during the day, and place himself in much more natural positions for social interaction.

10 Fun Ways To Reduce Your Cortisol Levels - 3 views

  •
These 10 fun ways to reduce cortisol levels are achievable by most anyone. Lissa has even created and provided a free self healing kit if any of these activities, particularly if you find it hard to sit still and be quiet, are difficult. I like the fact that each activity is very accessible and for the most part cost free. For example, laughter, try to win a stare down and not laugh. Or...listen to someone else laugh, that will get you every time... And it's FREE!!! This lady also provides some pretty cool TED talks, adding science to the topic.
