This is a great resource that is short and concise to help therapist incorporate their patients in the transfer process.  Safe transfers is about good positioning but it is also about have clear communication with the patient.  I like the sample phrases within this article aimed  at having better communication with the patient.  Communication that the patient can understand is crucial to the transfer process.

I thought this video was great for what has been being discussed in class between THP and safe transferring in/out of a vehicle. There are a few things mentioned in the video that I would have not considered for a THP, so I felt that others' may benefit from this as well. This video provides an example of how to educate a patient on the different precautions. I felt like this was important because OTA's are holistic and being able to transport safely from place to place is a very important factor.

Another video that shows some really amazing pieces of equipment that will help with many different types of transfers. If you have a crappy back like me this will be of interest to you.

Here is an example of an OT using the transfer technique I was educated on by the PTA during the mock clinicals. It states in the video that this was her first time getting up since her surgery. I wonder if having the patients on their side right after surgery in frowned upon. I am going to look for more resources about this. From everything I have found, this is the best way to go if they are able to use their upper body.

I found some very interesting information about upper extremity amputation. The article tells about the procedure and the role of the occupational therapist in the recovery process. With this procedure, an electrical prosthesis is controlled by the mind via nerve innervation. The nerves from the amputated arm are transferred to the pectoral muscles where they regenerate, which in turn allows movement of the prosthetic arm. Signal Strengthening An important goal following TMR is strengthening reinnervated muscles so they generate electrical signals that can be detected by surface electrodes. Strengthening the contraction of the transferred-nerve muscles before the fitting helps the patient develop the adequate endurance needed to proceed with TMR myoelectric prosthetic training.
