This article is about a study that is being researched on a new type of skin for severe burns. It has not been approved by the FDA, but it was said that mostly like it will be. This new skin is a water based formula called hydrogel. Severe burns do a lot of damage, but "This treatment promoted the development of new blood vessels and the regeneration of complex layers of skin, including hair follicles and the glands that produce skin oil," said Sharon Gerecht. So if this new study is approved, it is going to be one of the greatest things invented!!!

This short article discusses that scientist have discovered a new region of the brain that controls a person's motivation.  The tiny region, the dorsal medial habenula has been discovered to control the desire to exercise in mice.  This discovery can have huge implications in the way we treat mental illness.

Authors Amanda Botticello, PhD, MPH, and Nicolette Cobbold, BS, of the Kessler Foundation, West Orange, N.J., and Tanya Rohrbach, MS, of Raritan Valley Community College, Branchburg, N.J., explored associations between community and neighborhood land uses and community participation.

Thought this was super interesting! A new study has found that people who have been diagnosed with parkinson's disease have found a different bacteria level in the stomach. My thoughts are... will this maybe move us forward to finding a cure? Or understanding more of the onset and why it is caused?

This article discusses a study/clinical trial evaluating whether stimulating the brain before rehab could yield greater gains in motor function. In this process called TMS therapy they apply an electromagnetic current to excite the brain, which they believe slows activity in the healthy area of the brain, which can become overly active after a stroke. They want to improve all aspects of the weak arm such as ROM and strength and to see at the end of the study if it would help with ADL's.

This article brings visit ability closer to home, here in Knoxville Tennessee. The city of Knoxville is working towards getting publicly funded housing to be constructed to meet visitability standards. One statement in this article say that the difference in cost is minimal. This is good new when advocating visitability.

I found this article interesting because the new protocol it addresses seems to help a patient bounce back after surgery, reduces recovery time, and reduces the use of narcotics after surgery. After all, getting back to the routine of life and our daily occupations is what we do in OT!

The production company behind "Keeping up with the Kardashians" and other reality television staples will debut a new documentary series following young adults with Down syndrome. The six-episode series "Born This Way" will air on A&E Network starting Dec. 8 at 10 p.m. ET.----- I am anxious to see this show! I hope they portray it in a way that isn't dramatic and fake like all the other reality tv shows. I feel this show has to opportunity to show people more into the life of someone who lives with a disability! I know I'll be watching...anyone else?

I saw this on the news the other evening and found it very intersting to know that the schools are acknowledging and actually incorporating exercise into the ciriculum at school. They realize that increasing exercise actually leads to better educational performance.

This may be old news from almost a year ago, but i found this on the Vanderbilt website about how Dr. Michael Goldfarb has been working on robotic legs that emulates healthy limbs. It explains his research and his building of these legs. I found in the article that Dr. Goldfarb was also named one of the top 10 innovators who changed the world in 2013 for developing an exoskeleton that allows paraplegics to stand up and walk.

These hands are usually about $150,000 each but she gets them for free for being a spokesperson. She is excited and getting ready to pursue a second degree...at the time this was done. Nothing is stopping her.
