TED talk on Targeted Muscle Reinnervation - 3 views

  •
Awesome TEDtalk by Todd Kuiken about Targeted Muscle Reinnervation (the future of UE prothesis). This is a much watch video about the future of UE prosthesis. Targeted Muscle Reinnervation is an intuitive way to use hand and elbow prothesis with your thoughts. This is a better way to control your arm and grasp patterns. And hopefully in the future this technology will allow its users to 'feel' sensations in their prosthetic hand. Amanda, the patient talks about how the most important thing to her in working with children was the ability to clap again. Great video! Very informative.

Occupational therapy protocol for amputees with targeted muscle reinnervation - 1 views

Signal Strengthening An important goal following TMR is strengthening reinnervated muscles so they generate electrical signals that can be detected by surface electrodes. Strengthening the contraction of the transferred-nerve muscles before the fitting helps the patient develop the adequate endurance needed to proceed with TMR myoelectric prosthetic training.

The 'Minimal Muscle' Home - 0 views

I know it may be a faux pas to post an article from a PT website, but the article offers a lot of cool advice regarding house features that are beneficial for individuals with less muscle strength and endurance (whether they be seniors or otherwise physically disabled). The article goes through all areas of the house and highlights common problem areas and how they've been adapted. OT plays a big role in home safety evals, and this site offers a lot of wisdom on the topic.

The health hazards of sitting - The Washington Post - 9 views

  •
This article was an eye opener for me regarding the hazards of sitting too long and not using proper sitting techniques. I now know now why I have mushy abs and limp glutes! I sit for hours at my computer without taking a break, resting or stretching. I also do not sit in an ergonomic position while at my desk. From this article I gained a great deal of information about how sitting too long can contribute to heart disease, over-productive pancreas, colon cancer, poor circulation in legs, foggy brain, bad back, strained neck, disk damage, mushy abs and limp glutes, just to name a few. It was really surprising to learn how just from sitting too long can create havoc on your organs, muscles and your whole body. Gives you something to think about!

Targeted muscle reinnervation (TMR) - 3 views

  •
I found some very interesting information about upper extremity amputation. The article tells about the procedure and the role of the occupational therapist in the recovery process. With this procedure, an electrical prosthesis is controlled by the mind via nerve innervation. The nerves from the amputated arm are transferred to the pectoral muscles where they regenerate, which in turn allows movement of the prosthetic arm. I included this link from another website as well because there are videos available to watch. http://www.ric.org/conditions/prosthetics-orthotics/bionic/

Natural Treatments for Rheumatoid Arthritis - 3 views

Although not curable, RA symptoms can be alleviated by the same relaxation and breathing techniques we have already learned. Cold and warm compresses can be used to help with inflammation and pain. Mind/body therapies have been shown to be of great help to those with RA. Progressive muscle relaxation, visualization, meditation, and biofeedback are all good techniques to teach our clients when traditional medications are not enough. Also, these techniques can be used in many other areas.

Cardiopulmonary responses to eccentric and concentric resistance exercise in older adults - 1 views

  •
Background: in older ambulatory persons, exercise strategies that are expected to generate beneficial muscle adaptations with low cardiopulmonary demands are needed. Objective: we hypothesised that eccentric resistance exercise would be less demanding on the cardiovascular and pulmonary systems than bouts of concentric resistance exercise.

How Intel Gave Stephen Hawking a Voice - 0 views

  •
Since we are learning about EADL this week I wanted to share this article. As I was reading this it surprised me that one of the smartest men on earth had trouble using the software device. The article pointed out that this 72 year old (Stephen Hawking) did not grow up using an iphone etc. That is something to think about when treating clients of all ages. I love that Hawking had a group of people working on this project for him and with him. He is able to communicate with the use of one muscle in his face. Read on to see how they are working on picking up on his brain waves to help him communicate. FASCINATING!

Prevention of Musculoskeletal Disorders in the Workplace Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) affect the muscles, nerves and tendons. Work related MSDs (including those of the neck, upper extremities and low back) are one of the leading causes of lost workday injury and illness.

This is a really great website that talks about ergonomics in the workplace. It specifically talks about how to prevent musculoskeletal disorders. One thing unique about this website is that it also address what the employers responsibilities are and what rights the worker has in regards to prevention, and a safe workplace. It gives multiple links to OSHA standards for a workplace, and also a list of some of the top careers that result in musculoskeletal disorders.
