NPR and the False Choice of Alternative Medicine - 0 views

I have become increasingly interested in the topic if research lately. This article does a good job of showing how some simply misrepresent data and leads me to believe more in looking for the source of the research as well as the personal interest the researcher may have on the subject. Research and the source of it can give us a lot of information. Not all research is reliable though.
How Stress And Sleep Loss Are Shortening Your Life - 1 views

Would you prioritize sleep if you knew it kept your immune system strong? That's the question the American Academy of Sleep Medicine wants you to ponder this week. Lost in the hoopla surrounding Independence day was the publication of some eye-opening (or eye-shutting) research by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine showing that the immune system responds sharply to sleep loss.

This article emphasizes the correlation between stress and sleep. No matter our age, everyone needs plenty of sleep to properly function. Sleep is a time for our bodies to "reboot". Just like stress, lack of sleep is harmful to one's overall well being. The article lists similar physiological effects that are caused from lack of sleep that our text book has listed for chronic stress. High stress levels and an inefficient amount of sleep wreak havoc on a persons immune system. It is always easier said than done, but we all could improve our health by finding ways to reduce stress and sleep more.

Photo credit: John A. Rogers/University Of Illinois Researchers from Northwestern University and the University of Illinois have developed a discreet, wearable device that provides around-the-clock monitoring of both heart and skin health. Just my style! What a great article! This article talks about the great benefits of knitting and what knitting does to keep your hands healthy by way of function. It's a great workout for your hands, fingers and forearms, but not a strenuous workout. Knitting also is a stress relief activity, can improve your mood, relieves anxiety and depression. I have not tried knitting. I have always cross-stitched. I can tell you, when I finish school, this is definitely on my bucket list, along with learning to paint!

I found this really neat resource for individuals going through the cancer process. This program is for the patients at Columbia - Presbyterian Medical Center who are going through cancer treatments and the volunteers of this program will comfort them, provide them with information, or just sit with them when they are getting their treatment just to pass the time. All of the volunteers have had cancer so they understand the different aspects that it entails. This would be a great idea for other hospitals to implement.
TED talk on Targeted Muscle Reinnervation - 3 views

Awesome TEDtalk by Todd Kuiken about Targeted Muscle Reinnervation (the future of UE prothesis). This is a much watch video about the future of UE prosthesis. Targeted Muscle Reinnervation is an intuitive way to use hand and elbow prothesis with your thoughts. This is a better way to control your arm and grasp patterns. And hopefully in the future this technology will allow its users to 'feel' sensations in their prosthetic hand. Amanda, the patient talks about how the most important thing to her in working with children was the ability to clap again. Great video! Very informative.
