Education: Learning difficulties | The Economist - 1 views

  •
A PARADOX of education is that presenting information in a way that looks easy to learn often has the opposite effect. Numerous studies have demonstrated that when people are forced to think hard about what they are shown they remember it better, so it is worth looking at ways this can be done. And a piece of research about to be published in Cognition, by Daniel Oppenheimer, a psychologist at Princeton University, and his colleagues, suggests a simple one: make the text conveying the information harder to read.

Television as a source of information and its evaluation your communication skills - 0 views

People's views and knowledge about the subject can be as much influenced by media sources as anything else. This presents difficulties, as increasingly evidence is emerging to suggest that the profile of industrial relations presented by television in particular is not very representative.

News Blog Articles | Stereotyping Increases With Age | Miller-McCune Online Magazine - 0 views

  • A decade ago, a research team led by William von Hippel of the University of Queensland challenged that assumption. The psychologists proposed that older people may exhibit greater prejudice because they have difficulty inhibiting the stereotypes that regularly get activated in all of our brains. They suggested an aging brain is not as effective in suppressing unwanted information — including stereotypes.
  • This finding supports our suggestion that older adults are more likely to make stereotypic inferences during comprehension, and that this stereotyping carries over into their later memory for that information
  • older adults are no more likely than younger adults to rely on stereotypes, and are similarly capable of altering their interpretation of a situation when information suggests that information is incorrect.
  • ...1 more annotation...
  • In real life, of course, no one is pointing out biased statements as they emerge from the mouths or friends, family members or talk-show hosts. So for older adults, the best advice might be to avoid acquaintances who speak in stereotypes. This research suggests prejudice can be contagious, and we become more susceptible as our brains age.
  •
we are all prejudiced, and judge through making use of stereotypes- but older people find it difficult to suppress them, whereas we do it quite efficiently. Good news is, if these stereotypes are challenged, they see the light and shed their prejudices.

  • anxiety disorder to achieve remission. The disorder, estimated to affect 6.8 million U.S. adults, involves constant, exaggerated worries about impending disasters regarding health, money or other issues.
  • A similar form of attention guidance, directed by psychologist Norman Schmidt of Florida State University in Tallahassee, provided marked relief for many patients diagnosed with social anxiety disorder. About 15 million U.S. adults struggle with this condition, which is characterized by a debilitating dread of everyday social situations and a fear of being watched and judged by others.

  • One-shot learning is unusual. Most learning happens over a far longer time-scale,
    • Robert Kamper

more accurately, most learning occurs in small increments which are accrued over a longer period of time. Units of learning within a curriculum, if you think of it that way - it seems so obvious to someone who has already learned to think of it that way....
  • It is because learning has this tendency to make itself invisible that teaching is such a difficult and noble tradition.
    • Robert Kamper

I don't know if I agree with this. Names like Tyler, Bloom, Bruner, have been involved in identifying domains of knowledge and levels of knowledge, scope and span of curriculum, and there is a vast literature about both the philosophy and the logistics and mechanics of education and instruction. Unfortunately (soapbox) in the USA we pay millions for distractions and entertainment and a pittance for teaching our children how to learn and how to think. Paying homage is no substitute for wages if you wish to attract skilled and effective teachers.

Don't Shelter Your Children: Coping With Stress As A Child Develops Resilience And Emot... - 5 views

  • We already know that "suffering builds character", but a new study suggests that it may do a lot more than that.
  • Successfully coping with stress at an early age may significantly increase your chances of being a more resilient adult, as well as strengthen your ability to regulate emotions.
  • Parents may feel that by preventing their child from encountering any and all potential hardship they are helping to preserve their emotional well-being, but going through a little stress and encouraging them to cope with it effectively will benefit them far more when it comes to being a more resilient, independent, and emotionally stable adult.
  • ...6 more annotations...
  • Stressful experiences that are challenging but not overwhelming appear to promote the development of subsequent resilience in children.
  • Youths that were exposed to stress actually had less anxiety, lower levels of stress, and had more confidence in exploring novel situations
  • after coping with stress successfully, your brain says, "Hey, that wasn't too bad. I can handle this."
  • The key point in the article is that mild stress exposure resulted in positive changes in the brain, not torture or a series of near-death experiences.
  • The take-home point is this: not all stress is bad.
  • You can't buffer your child from every non-happy moment in his life, so at least take comfort in the fact that while he is suffering in the short term, he is enhancing his well-being in the long term.
