This website discusses green project management. There are posts for certifications, training, conferences, and more. I was drawn into reading more on this because it never crossed my mind that there was "green" project management.

This site offers a whole host of tools that are helpful--in addition to other content and guidance. Zoho offers a suite of online web applications geared towards increasing your productivity and offering easy collaboration. Zoho's online office tools include a word processor, spreadsheet application, presentation tool, hosted wiki, notebook, CRM, Database software, etc. I have used it for some of the database applications. They also have a Project Management tool. The collaboration tools could also be used by members of a project team to share documents and to work together on projects. Prince2.com is a website where you can download various project management courses. Also, this website has an option to download some courses for free, which seems beneficial!

This is a specialized site in project management practice that provides a central site tool, references, news, projects, training offers and many other resources to help people interested in joining a PM community online. Their mission description is to help project managers be successful mainly by providing connections, information, technology resources, and advice. I found this page very helpful in this area and with a good collaborative and iterative structure.

I was researching information on writing an effective business case when I came across this blog. It's written by a practicing PM, which makes it interesting to me because I'm not officially a PM. The author's posts cover a variety of topics that are informative and interesting, and she gives a lot of helpful tips about project management. I especially like how she tags her articles and gives them simple titles, which makes it easy to skim over the pages and find something that piques your interest. Also, the articles are a good length for quick information-gathering.

This is a tool that I wanted to share because I know in ILT a lot of people tout using Adobe Captivate for various projects. I recently came across Active Presenter, which has a no-time-limit free version that does all of the basic features of Captivate, most notably screen capturing. One of the obstacles I run into with project management is having everyone on a project team understand how to use various resources. If you have an SME who would be willing to make a quick screen capture of how to use a tool and record it using this program, it will save a lot of time getting everyone on the same page.

Time saver and better screen capturing than Captivate? I must try it!

Open Source desktop project management software. This is an awesome tool for those of us without access to the likes of MS Project.

Open Source desktop project management and can be used as an alternative to Microsoft Project. PM's can create GANT charts, and also many other templates.

It looks great, but I'm always suspicious about what type of Trojan I might download with these programs. Has anyone used it successfully?

I had looked at this too. It seems that most PM software ends up having to be paid for. I guess making it free ties to the idea if taking money off the table and using a collaborative organizational model :)

There is a huge variety of project management applications out there. Most are general purpose apps, not aimed at any one industry. But there are a growing number of project management apps aimed specifically at one industry or another. Applications geared toward creative types are becoming more readily available, and some of the offerings are really quite good.

Thanks for posting - it is nice to see a list like this of many of the competing methodologies out there. My interviewee told me that the most important thing prospective PMs can do is learn as many methods as possible as well as possible, because in reality, you need to mix and match them depending on what your project requires, and the more you know, the more you can adapt.
