    What:
    Connecting Math Concepts (CMC) is a research-validated developmental math program designed to be utilized with students in grades 1st - 6th. Corrective Mathematics (CM) is a research-validated, specialized math program designed to be utilized as a remedial/intervention program for those students in grades 4th - 12th who have not mastered basic math skills.  The program has four basic strands: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Both CMC and CM utilize explicit instruction to teach necessary pre-skills as well as basic math skills and strategies.  In this in-service, you will learn the rationale for CMC and CM, how to teach the pre-skills and strategy lessons embedded in the program, how to provide adequate practice and how to give the initial placement test, as well as on-going mastery assessments.

The institute is designed for all partners who collaborate on behalf of Montana's students to attend-teachers, paraprofessionals, administrators, parent volunteers, education faculty, education majors, and recent education graduates. This year the institute will focus on two strands: Learning-Focused Relationships and Co-Teaching. The institute includes two days of skills and concept training (Learning-Focused Relationships) and a two-day session on co-teaching as a specific mentoring model. You are encouraged to send teams to the training, but this is not a requirement. A registration discount will be offered for attending teams.   • Inexpensive and Easily Available Toys That Work for Children with Special NeedsWhen a birthday or holiday rolls around, I can usually get a nice assortment of age-appropriate toys for my typically-developing children for less than $100.  But just one adapted toy for my child with cerebral palsy can be anywhere from $50 to $200.   In an attempt to find some alternatives, I asked a group of moms what off-the-shelf toys worked well for their children, who have a wide range of disabilities, including physical, behavioral, developmental, and sensory disabilities.  I've included a variety of their favorites in this article.
