    Twenty years ago, telling a parent that their child suffered from Attention Deficit Disorder or Bipolar Disorder most often resulted in grief, denial, or even outrage. Today, studies show that parents diagnose their own children with mental disorders at a much higher rate than psychiatric experts. Schools are often caught between shrinking resources and increasing demands, as more children are identified as mentally disabled. Over two days, this workshop will help clear away some of the confusion and controversy surrounding mental health issues that most often affect school-age children. You will learn in practical terms, how a child with ADHD thinks, what motivates an oppositional child, which kids might actually have Bipolar Disorder, and which are simply moody. You will learn how psychiatric medications work to help, and sometimes to hurt. You will learn about the warning signs for violence in children and adolescents. Lastly, you will have a chance to ask advice about specific mental health issues in your school. In short, this workshop is designed to help you understand, teach, and advocate for your students with mental illness.

    This session will explore free web-based tools that support the basic constructs of Universal Design for Learning. Strategies for engaging learners to write and express their knowledge creatively using these tools will be highlighted throughout the session. Participants will walk away with ideas that they can put to use right away without the need for purchasing new equipment or software.

    Participants will explore a range of free web-based tools, such as PhotoPeach, GingerSoft, Animoto, and Read/Write/Think that can be used to support writing for students with diverse needs. They will learn how utilizing multimedia applications along with spelling and grammar supports can engage reluctant writers and promote the type of written language skills required in most standards based educational settings. Participants will learn how to maximize the use of tools that are free or low cost in these cost cutting times and how to integrate them with tools that they may already have. When:

She now owns her own consulting business focusing on great play spaces in communities. She has presented at local, state, and national conferences on the topics play, sensory integration and Universal Design. Conferences include the Association of Children's Museums, American Occupational Therapy Association, Parents As Teachers, and National Association of the Education of the Young Child (NAEYC).

  • The Freedom Stick is a system, it can be downloaded and installed on a 4gb Flash Drive and carried everywhere by the student, plugged into and used on school computers or public library computers, or even employer computers – anywhere any version of Microsoft Windows is installed (including on Apple Macintosh computers which can have Windows installed as a second operating system). Or it can be installed directly onto your own computer. It is safe in all computing environments, tested globally since development began in Scotland with EduApps. This version was developed with US Department of Education and Michigan Department of Education grants through Michigan’s Integrated Technology Supports (MITS) in order to bring Universal Design Technology to American schools. The Freedom Stick is a collection of free, open-source programs which provide the widest range of supports for differing student needs. It is also a system supported by a range of learning tools – including a full set of “how to use” videos and presentations. It is easy to adapt to the students own needs, and it works with the supports included in Windows to create a true Universal Solution Set.

Toys Cars Offer Mobility to Children with Disabilities - 0 views

  • At the 2012 USA Science & Engineering Festival, children swarmed a National Science Foundation exhibit booth featuring electric-powered, child-sized toy cars. Assistants carefully explained how to operate the cars, which featured unique designs and operating features. One of cars, for example, would move only if the child driver remained standing. To stop, the driver had to sit down. Excited children and their parents wondered about the cars' purpose; after all, these cars weren't being exhibited at a science and engineering event for being ordinary toys.
  • University of Delaware researchers had, in fact, specifically designed the cars to provide mobility to very young children with special needs.
