    In the spirit of discovery, the annual Montana Youth Transitions (MYT) Conference will seek to answer important questions about the challenging journey into adulthood for Montana's youth with disabilities. It will be an opportunity for students, parents, teachers, vocational rehabilitation counselors, case managers and others to network, explore resources, and discover pathways to meaningful futures! During the conference, there will be a Real Life Fair with vendors representing education, independent living, recreation, employment, and other supportive services.
    Presenters will include well known keynotes as well as Montanans who have themselves gone through the transition process and can offer insight, guidance and support. A youth track will also be provided to start youth on their own individualized transition journey. When:

Additional regulations were published on December 1, 2008 and became effective on December 31, 2008. Since publication of the regulations, the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services (OSERS) in the U.S. Department of Education (Department) has received requests for clarification of some of these regulations. This is one of a series of question and answer (Q&A) documents prepared by OSERS to address some of the most important issues raised by requests for clarification on a variety of high-interest topics. Each Q&A document will be updated to add new questions and answers as important issues arise or to amend existing questions and answers as needed.

  • A U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit (CA, OR, WA, AZ, MT, ID, NV, AK, HI, GU, MP) three-judge panel has ruled that the parents of two children with autism stated a valid claim for damages under§ 504 of the Rehabilitation Act against the Hawaii Department of Education (HDE) for denying their children meaningful access to the benefit of a public education. The panel concluded that the parents’ allegations that HDE failed to provide the children with reasonable accommodations for their disabilities through autism-specific special education services, and failed to design the children’s Individualized Education Programs (IEP) to meet their needs as adequately as the needs of non-disabled students were met, were sufficient to raise a question of material fact as to whether HDE was deliberately indifferent in violation of § 504.

  • The Impact on Students with LD and AD/HD The Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act of 2008 (ADAAA) was passed by Congress in December 2008 and became effective January 1, 2009. This significant piece of legislation corrected what Congress considered to be a departure from the intent of the original ADA (passed in 1990) brought about by several narrow interpretations of the law through Supreme Court rulings. These rulings weakened the law and made it difficult for people with disabilities to receive the protection the law intended.The ADAAA also has a direct and substantial impact on Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (Section 504) -an important law that provides protections for school-age children with disabilities.   This Parent Advocacy Brief will help you understand the changes brought about by the ADAAA, how they apply to Section 504, and how these changes may impact children with disabilities, including learning disabilities, as well as other conditions such as Attention-Deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorder (AD/HD), Aspergers Syndrome, diabetes, asthma, and life-threatening food allergies.
