    What:
    Middle and High schools offer unique challenges for implementing a multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS). The major key is to build school-wide systems that simultaneously addresses  the need for academic and behavioral support and ensures every student has the skills to earn a high school diploma. The answers to behavioral and academic MTSS are right inside every staff development session, but a plan that includes the use of multiple assessment tools to foster data based decision making requires a shift in process for many schools. This session will provide ideas, work time and technology tools that support MTSS implementation and help MS/HS  with the shift. Session work will be differentiated to meet the needs of individual schools, with facilitator support provided.

The goal is to provide high-quality, Level I training for Montana school counselors and administrators.   • What: The annual Montana Mentor Institute 2011 – the Art and Science of Teacher Mentoring is scheduled for August 8-10, 2011, at the Best Western GranTree Inn in Bozeman. This year the institute will have a novice strand for mentors new to the teacher mentoring process and a skilled strand for teacher mentors who have previously attended a mentor institute. The structure for the institute includes two days of skills and concept training, and a half day of team planning and resources available to support instruction. Districts that have developed teacher mentor programs in Montana consistently report that providing high-quality training to the mentors is a challenge. The Mentor Institute is a great place to have your teacher mentors trained.   • PALO ALTO, Calif. -- Tatyana Ray has more than 1,200 Facebook friends, sends 600 texts a month and participated in four student clubs during the year and a half she attended high school online, through a program affiliated with Stanford University. Although top public and private high schools abound in her affluent area of Palo Alto, the 17-year-old originally applied to the online school because she and her parents thought it looked both interesting and challenging. She enjoyed the academics but eventually found she was lonely. She missed the human connection of proms, football games and in-person, rather than online, gossip. The digital clubs for fashion, books and cooking involved Web cams and blogs and felt more like work than fun. Last winter, Ms. Ray left the online school and enrolled at a local community college for a semester.
