2013 COPAA Conference Request for Proposals Now Open - 0 views

    The 15th Annual COPAA Conference in  Albuquerque, NM, March 7-10th is your best opportunity for training and networking with the most experienced and knowledgeable special education advocates and attorneys on special education issues. The Council of Parent Attorneys and Advocates (COPAA) is an independent, nonprofit membership organization of special education attorneys, special education advocates, related professionals, and parents/family members. Disseminating knowledge of protections under the law, advocacy strategy, and educational best practice is an important part of leveling the playing field and enabling parents to meaningfully participate in their child's educational programs. The 2013 Conference Committee is now accepting proposals to present a breakout session as part of the conference. Breakout sessions are 1 hour and 15 min in length and are held on Saturday, March 9th and Sunday, March 10th. (Note: Attorneys who represent education agencies and current employees of education agencies who receive greater than 50% of income from school district are not eligible to attend the conference or submit proposals.)     When upper elementary or secondary students fail written assessments, teachers often assume it's because they lack specific content knowledge. But what if it's simply because they cannot read the multisyllabic words? All reading consists of three components: word identification, vocabulary, and comprehension. Word identification is often overlooked and can be the root of students' failure. Hear about new evidence-based data on prefixes, suffixes, and Greek roots occurring most often in content-area words that supports a shared responsibility for strengthening students' literacy skills. Discover quick, formative assessments for upper elementary and secondary teachers that measure students' ability to use knowledge of syllable types, syllable division patterns, and common morphemes (e.g., prefixes, suffixes, Greek roots) to decode multisyllabic words. The CORE Teaching Reading Sourcebook, a comprehensive resource in teaching research based reading instruction, is used during the session as a resource in helping teachers improve instruction in multisyllabic word instruction.

  • The Instructional Innovations Unit is excited to provide an incredible online resource for all Montana educators. This professional development data base within the OPI website contains hundreds of video clips, lessons, and resources that can be downloaded onto your computer and iPod.  This resource is a direct result of the Montana Reading First project.  However, it also contains content for teachers Pre-K through high school.  Knowing that statewide professional development is extremely difficult because of the rural nature of our state, the Montana Reading First project director, Debbie Hunsaker, planned and initiated this resource called ‘Knowledge Box’. Throughout the implementation of the Reading First project, national and local presenters were filmed and the content was edited into short video clips, resources, and lessons. No Genetic Associations Found in Autism GWAS | The 23andMe Blog - 0 views

  • Their study, known as the Autism Genome Project (AGP), was conducted in two stages. The first stage of consisted of a genome-wide association study using genetic data from 1400 families affected by autism; the second stage checked the associations discovered in the first stage using the genetic data from an additional 1301 ASD-affected families and included another new genome-wide association study which combined the study subjects from both stages. When all the analyses were said and done, no SNPs (common genetic variations) were significantly associated with ASD. Furthermore, when some of the SNPs that had been identified in the first study as possibly associated with ASD were tested in the second-stage families, the associations failed to hold up.  This lack of common SNPs associated with ASD is both disappointing and enlightening. Knowledge of what is not true, paradoxically, is knowledge of what is true.  For instance, if I tell you that my pet Tyger is not a dog, you are one step closer to knowing Tyger’s a cat.  Most of science progresses through “not trues” — the failed hypotheses that bring us closer to real understanding. A perfect example of this mode of scientific progress is this recent genetic study.  Their lack of findings was quite a finding.
