    What:
Explore the current issues and trends surrounding assistive technology devices and service for public schools and districts. Current technology-related issues are catching the attention of many state and local education agencies with the development of operational guidelines surrounding implementation and development of technology in general. Assistive technology tools, devices and services have been interwoven into the fabric of least restrictive environment (LRE) to afford access to the general curriculum and instructional materials for our special needs students for many years (since IDEA 2004). However, with the onset of "Bring Your Own Device" (BYOD) or "Bring Your Own Technology" (BYOT) in addition to mobile technologies being used by all school personnel, district operational guidelines are blurring the line of assistive and instructional technology.

Tongue piercing lets paralysed drive wheelchairs - Story - World - 3 News - 0 views

  • An experimental device is letting paralysed people drive wheelchairs simply by flicking their tongue in the right direction. Key to this wireless system: Users get their tongue pierced with a magnetic stud that resembles jewellery and acts like a joystick, in hopes of offering them more mobility and independence. Researchers reported Wednesday that 11 people paralysed from the neck down rapidly learned to use the tongue device to pilot their wheelchairs through an obstacle course full of twists and turns, and to operate a computer, too.

About - Special Needs Apps for Kids (SNApps4Kids.com) - 0 views

  • SNApps4Kids is a community of parents, therapists, doctors, and teachers who share information on how we are using the iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch and Android devices with children who have special needs.  We have found these mobile devices to provide accessibility for children who may have been previously disengaged from the world because of challenging language, motor, or other developmental delays.  Given the rising number of apps on the market and the diverse skills of children with special needs, parents have found each other to be one of the best resources for choosing apps to enhance everyday life for our children.  While our group is primarily parent-driven, our efforts are naturally collaborative with the people who help our children develop particular skills — therapists and educators.
