Jen will give examples of multiple means of:

        representation; how you show what you are teaching
        expression; how students show what they're learning
        engagement: how you "hook" students.

    She'll talk about lessons that flexibly address a variety of materials, classroom conditions, staff, and students, and the benefits for UDL/technology integration from an AT standpoint.

    Course Description: School teams, comprised of teachers, administrators, counselors, specialists, academic coaches or anyone working with programming options for gifted students, will be presented with the OPI Framework for Gifted Education Programs and a Gifted Program Planning Template. This is a working session, at the end of which, the teams will have a firm grasp of the state framework and will use the template to construct a gifted program that fits their district and population. Time will be provided to work on individual program plans.

    Practical Strategies for Meeting the Needs of High Ability Students
    Course description: This course will focus on the Identification of Advanced Learners. Topics will include: Working from a collaborative written philosophy; using formative assessment--observing student behaviors, pre-assessment, etc. to modify instruction; using summative assessment--making formal identification of students for services. This will be a hands-on workshop with time for discussion and application of content to specific settings and situations.

If you are looking for an interactive, hands-on workshop that will help you realize the power of this device and how it can be used in a K-12 classroom, then this is the one for you. This workshop is designed to introduce educators to using the iPad as a tool to enhance their teaching and thus improve student learning. This course looks at iPad basic operations as well as advance configurations and use as a teaching tool integrated into existing content. During this workshop you will have the opportunity to discover the countless ways you can use this device to change the way you "do" education. This workshop will assist you in learning the basics of working with your iPad, how to research apps to determine which ones are right for your classroom, and introduce the many accessories that can be added to your iPad to extend its functionality. This workshop is for the beginner to the old pro.

    The Family Voices National Center for Family and Professional Partnerships is hosting this webinar presented by Suzanne M. Bronheim, PhD of Georgetown University Center for Child and Human Development. Suzanne will share findings from a 2010 research partnership with three Family-to-Family Health Information Centers (F2F HICs) to better understand how Hispanic/Latino families' and African American families' utilization of F2F HICs might be increased. This research project is based on a social marketing theory that suggests that people try new things if that "innovation" fits with their values and experience, seems to have an advantage over other approaches, is easy to use, can be tried and dropped if they don't like it and if others they know and trust are also aware of it and have used it. The project has used this framework to study how Hispanic/Latino and African American families prefer to receive information and how they view the F2F HICs as a resource. In addition, this project has studied similar issues for the social networks of families to learn how they view and access F2F HICs. Suzanne will be joined by staff of the F2F HICs that partnered in this project to share lessons learned and suggestions of how other F2F HICs can use this framework.

Standards-Based IEPs Class Offering - 0 views

  • We are pleased to announce a summer class presented online by Gail McGregor of the University of Montana on Standards-Based IEPS.&nbsp; It is an excellent and reasonably priced opportunity for graduate credits and meaningful professional development for special education teachers, content teachers, special education directors and coops, and other educators who work with students with special needs. This course is designed to introduce general and special education teachers to the concept of standard-based IEPs and is organized around a series of five webcasts that have been created for the Montana Office of Public Instruction (OPI).&nbsp; Supplementary readings and course assignments are designed to complement the information in the webinars.&nbsp; The course syllabus and webinars are on the OPI website at: http://www.opi.mt.gov/Curriculum/MontCAS/MontCAS_Presents.html#gpm1_3 &nbsp;This course will be offered through the Office of Public Instruction and the University of Montana.&nbsp; The Office of Public Instruction will provide the environment for the online learning communities that are part of the course.&nbsp; The environment for the learning communities will be Adobe Connect webinars.&nbsp; Students will need to have Flash Player and the Adobe Connect Add-in installed on their computers and have a microphone and speakers in order to participate in the learning communities.&nbsp; OPI will assist participants in connecting and has microphones for check-out if needed. &nbsp;Participants may take the course for renewal units through OPI or graduate credits through the University of Montana, and the grading option is a traditional letter grade.&nbsp; Registration and payment for graduate credit is also through the University of Montana. The cost for two graduate credits is $135.     This session will explore free web-based tools that support the basic constructs of Universal Design for Learning. Strategies for engaging learners to write and express their knowledge creatively using these tools will be highlighted throughout the session. Participants will walk away with ideas that they can put to use right away without the need for purchasing new equipment or software.

    Participants will explore a range of free web-based tools, such as PhotoPeach, GingerSoft, Animoto, and Read/Write/Think that can be used to support writing for students with diverse needs. They will learn how utilizing multimedia applications along with spelling and grammar supports can engage reluctant writers and promote the type of written language skills required in most standards based educational settings. Participants will learn how to maximize the use of tools that are free or low cost in these cost cutting times and how to integrate them with tools that they may already have. When:

    The Common Core State Standards for Mathematical Content are designed to be focused and coherent in order to improve mathematics achievement. These content standards are articulated over time as a sequence of topics and performances that are logical and move students to deeper understanding of mathematics. The standards stress conceptual understanding of key mathematical ideas and incorporate research-based learning progressions about how students mathematical knowledge, skill, and understanding develop over time. These workshops are presented as a series of four sessions. Each session will build on the previous sessions. Participants must attend all four sessions.

    Twenty years ago, telling a parent that their child suffered from Attention Deficit Disorder or Bipolar Disorder most often resulted in grief, denial, or even outrage. Today, studies show that parents diagnose their own children with mental disorders at a much higher rate than psychiatric experts. Schools are often caught between shrinking resources and increasing demands, as more children are identified as mentally disabled. Over two days, this workshop will help clear away some of the confusion and controversy surrounding mental health issues that most often affect school-age children. You will learn in practical terms, how a child with ADHD thinks, what motivates an oppositional child, which kids might actually have Bipolar Disorder, and which are simply moody. You will learn how psychiatric medications work to help, and sometimes to hurt. You will learn about the warning signs for violence in children and adolescents. Lastly, you will have a chance to ask advice about specific mental health issues in your school. In short, this workshop is designed to help you understand, teach, and advocate for your students with mental illness.

During that time she worked with numerous communities and children's museums helping them expand their understanding of Universal Design and the importance of Sensory Play in every childs' development. She continued this work as Therapy Director at Hattie Larlham, Mantua, OH, where she oversaw therapy and recreation programs for children of varying abilities. She now owns her own consulting business focusing on great play spaces in communities. She has presented at local, state, and national conferences on the topics play, sensory integration and Universal Design. Conferences include the Association of Children's Museums, American Occupational Therapy Association, Parents As Teachers, and National Association of the Education of the Young Child (NAEYC).
