U.S. Hunger - 4 views

This article is giving information about how many people are struggling in the United States from poverty. It gives causes and facts about hunger in the U.S. It was very eye opening when I read that 13 percent of people in the U.S. struggle with hunger. 16.7 million children live in households that struggle with putting food on the table.

Wow! Has it really gotten so bad that 1 in 4 familys struggle to put food on the table? I meen,i can't think about that because sometimes if i don't like whats on my plate then i throw it away and some people woule die for that.
  •
The "Causes of Hunger in the US" article was super interesting. It made me realize that we have so much food in the US but if you don't have money to buy it, then you just can't buy it at all.
  •
i was suprsed to see that 13% of people are living in poverty in the united states
  •
I know Adele! When I don't like something on my plate, I just throw it away and not think about how much someone right then is struggling and starving.
  •
its amazing that poverty hits so close to home
  •
In the "hunger and poverty in african americans" article, i was so shocked of the total income, food insecurities, and poverty total. I am completely blown away by this!
  •
I definetly agree with Adele. It's also sad that 51.4% of Americans will live in poverty before the age of 65. But it is nice to see that not only does this website have facts that grab you and give you a sense of how big this problem is, they also have solutions. The more solutions we can get, the better.

This website provides information about several health issues that are a result of poverty. It also introduces you to one of the several solutions to help end poverty. This article really forced me to see the reality of it and just how many people are impacted.

This website is about world poverty and its effects. The home page has a map of people dying all around the world because of hunger/hunger related causes.
  •
This website shows deaths this hour, and sadly it is mostly kids ans women who die. I noticed none of the deaths are from America.
  •
Well, this article tells you facts about poverty. It tells you organizations that help out this problem too. It told me that over 25,000 people die because of poverty and I was like, "OMGNOWAY!!"
  •
It really mad me sad to see all of the faces on the map. It made me sad, but yet it mezmorized me to see all of the people that had died
  •
I hated how the faces were showing up, but what made me sad was that most of them were in asia, africa, and a few were in south america. What i REALLY didn't like was at the bottom of the home page, it said the faces and the names were fake.
  •
this article expains statistics and how although there is enough food for everybody, not everybody can afford it. About 25,000 people die every day of hunger, yet there is plenty of food in the world for everyone. its sad to see how many people are dying in just this hour.
  •
I was really disturbed when I read that 25,000 people die each day of hunger or hunger related causes... I knew people died but I never thought that it would be that many...
  •
Being in the situation we are, or at least the situation I am, I always feel very datatched rfom the world of poverty. But seeing the actual faces and coming to mental realization that these4 are people with families and storys was really an eye opener. good find.
  •
oh my god, this article makes me soo depressed. but i don't understand how they could have the picture up of people who just died in that hour? unless i read it wrong
  •
One person dies every 3 and a half seconds according to the United Nations. Children die more often than adults. The world has plenty of food to feed everyone but the problem is that people are trapped in severe poverty. They dont have the money to buy the food. If they never have food, they become week and sick causing them to not work and they get poorer. There are programs around the world the can help children buy food when they are at school so their families can save money.
  •
It's sad just knowing how many people die from poverty, but seeing their faces makes it even worse!
  •
The fact that every 3 1/2 seconds, a person dies due to poverty is really sickening. It makes me feel guilty that we have such a great life compared to others.
  •
thats so sad that over 25,000 people die a day because of poverty. it is also very sad because they show the pictures of the people who died witch made me very sad.

Proverty effects people in many ways hunger, homelesness and more. In this artical I learned where hunger stricks the most in the world. I also saw how the rate of hunger has changed though out history to today. It hurt me to find out that "world hunger" is 925 million people.

I like the quiz on this site. The facts and statistics were interesting too.
  •
i know but its so sad the number of hungry people including kids (take the quiz)
  •
I took the quiz and missed questions 9. good article Kristen
  •
I was so sad when i found out that in 2009, 15.5 million (20.7 percent) children under the age of 18 were in poverty. Just imagen there could be some in are class.
  •
it was sad that throughout the years the percent tile has increased but it is a good thing that some of the numbers are going down aswell. that means people are getting better with their life. :D but its still veeery sad that people have to live like this.
  •
All the statistics started to scare me. With all of the percentages and numbers, and with them RISING< it just is kind of worrying me.
  •
I can't believe 11% of all families are in poverty. That's about one in ten families. I know at least ten families... It's too bad that there is enough money and resources for everyone, but after preschool, everyone forgot how to share. Imagine how the world would be more serene if everyone had the same amount of money.
  •
I was surprised to hear that 5.6 million people in the U.S. have used food pantries, that is a lot more than I thought.
  •
i never knew how big of an impact food pantries had. i was surprised that 4.8% of people in the US had to go to a food pantry once...i thought only a few homeless people went there. and that 57% of people in poverty get reduced lunches in school...i could not imagine how embarassing that would be.
  •
I really like how you can quiz yourself on poverty. I learned a lot from that. Some information was very surprising but at the same time very depressing/sad.
  •
Woah. Holy crap, I didn't know that there was so much poverty in the world. when I read those statistics I was like O_O
  •
"In 2009, 5.7 percent of households (6.8 million households) experienced very low food security." That could anyone you know. This tells what Mrs. Smith and what Mrs. Lanka was saying that you could know people that are in poverty but aren't aware.
  •
Whoa. That was some high statistics. And that one about kids at the beginning , i was all "Awwwww thats so sad." :'(
  •
I like how you can quiz yourslef over poverty. The stastics and facts are really eye opening/ interesting to learn about.
  •
i got a hundred percent on the quiz! But it was really eye opening to find out that most people in poverty aren't in urban settings.
  •
This is a great website. I love how it has all the statistics. It's just really sad to see how bad poverty has gotten over the years :^(
  •
I was really surprised by how many people are in poverty and how fast it was rising.
  •
All these stats iterally made my jaw drop. I'm sure everyone would agree that these are very weighted words.
  •
I couldn't believe how many people were in poverty and how how fast it was rising. When i read this i wanted to donate food to food pantries so people in poverty could have more to eat.
  •
I found it very shocking by how much the poverty rate increased from 2008 to 2009. It didnt even show 2010 or 2011 which means it must have rapidly increased again. Its a great website but a very sad one.

it suprised me that only 13% of people in the u.s. live in poverty.
  •
It surprised me that 26.9 percent of latino's have a hard time to put food on the table. I feel sad.
  •
if america is one of the wealthiest countries we should be sharing the wealth instead of keeping it to ourselves. it surprised me that most people will go through poverty before they are 65.

I really liked this site! INstead of just talking about poverty, it also was talking about nutrition. I found it very interesting, and i really liked reading it. Thank you for sharing this!

This site talked about ways to help with poverty. I liked how it listed different sites you could go to for more information and besides that really just educated the reader. I feel that it's format could have been different though so as not to bore the reader.
  •
That is rediculous how many people die every year from poverty! I cant even begin to imagine what it would be like to live in a situation like those people were in. Not having enough food, or a warm place to sleep at night

This article is about the definition of hunger and malnutrition, what causes malnutrition, like someone with celic disease, effects of malnutrition, such as getting a weak imune system and fatigue, like who has a high risk of malnutrition, such as people living in poverty, and treatments and recommendations for malnutrition, which is talking to your doctor. Knowing that over 1 billion people in the world are malnurished is heart-breaking and nervracking, since that's more than the U.S., Canda, and the European Union's entire population!

It really scares me to know that one child dies every five seconds from hunger. Also, it was eye-opening to see that 9 million kids die of hunger before their fifth birthday. I think it's really unfair that someone that young has to go through such living.

It's really really sad how a child dies every five seconds!! It's also amazing how many people have dropped into poverty over just the last 2 years.
  •
every five seconds...? Wow, I counted to 10 in my head and two kids just died 0_o
  •
These facts are really depressing its so upsetting to hear that a child dies every fives seconds and how the recession has pushed 100-150 million people into poverty
  •
I can't believe that just last year the entire total of people in poverty reached all the way up to 100-150 million people. It's really shocking that while this was happening, I was sitting here without a clue. It's truly amazing what goes on when you turn away for but a moment.
  •
Like Julia. That's actually pretty scary and deppressing. 925 million people in poverty is pretty insane. It's hard to see people in poverty who lives their life stuggling for food and/or $$... :(
  •
It's sad that a kid dies every five seconds. But whats even worse is that 9 million kids die before their fifth birthday.
  •
omg thats so sad and scary makes me count my blessings
  •
925 million people are hungry. They cant put food on their tables. I think we take it for granted. We always have food in our fridges, we always have food on our tables. We need to appreciate more for what we get. Next time our moms put something on the table we don't like, you should still appreciate that you get food in your bodies. There are millions people out there that would do anything for just a thing of spinach.

  •
D: That's so sad.I know there are a lot of people out there who can't get the kind of healthcare they need, and I know a ton of people who go to the hospital often. If there are that many in my neighborhood, I wonder how many can't afford to go to the hospital.
  •
This article was really sad, I couldn't believe that over 250,000 children die from hunger each week. I think it gave lots of good information without too much to read.
  •
Great article. It was sad but atleast it wasn't trying to hide the truth or make it sound not as bad as it is. The fact that so many children die cannot be ignored...
  •
With so many children dieing I almost wish people wouldn't have babies if they can't feed them because in the end the child will die.
  •
Its disappointing because at the end of world war 2 scientist that with the advancement of technology, poverty would disappear but it didn't ;(

The fact that more than three quarters of women have HIV is scary I felt. When I saw that women in are giving up their food their food so that their children can eat is really sad. This article and all the other articles that I've been reading makes me want to do something.
  •
this is a really great article. i new that poverty affected everyone that has to go through it, but i never realised how much more it affects woman. I wonder why AIDS is now more of a womans disease?
  •
I couldn't believe that 3/4 of young people with HIV and AIDS were women! That really scares me. I agree with Mariah that women giving up food for their children is really sad. This article really makes me want to find "solutions" to poverty.
  •
I couldn't belive that women are usually in poverty! Young girls don't go to school, and 3/4 of young people with HIV and AIDS are young girls! To hear women giving up their meals so their children can have food is so sad. THis really wants me to take action and try to help those in need.
  •
2/3 of women!! I agree with Molly. That scares me as well. The one thing I'm wondering is why women? Why are women getting the disease? Women are making a sacrifice so their children can eat is very brave. Especially in poverty. I can see they are making a big scarafice.
  •
I thought is was really sad when they said that women are trying to help meet their families needs but are restricted because of the lack of resources. I would hate to be in poverty, but it would be even worse if you had to watch your children suffer and there is no way that you can help them.

More people die as a result of extreme poverty than of any other cause. I wanna know what from poverty, from not being able to buy food or is it from not being able to go to a doctor when they are sick? Is it both? I wanna know what exactly is it. I was hurt to find out the 10 million kids in developing countiers die before the age of 5. Its painful to hear about thoose things and now at this moment i am woundering what is for lunch and i had breakfast this morning and that i am already 13 and have had a nice life so far but some kids wont even get to be my age.
  •
Thia gives a lot of facts about poverty, that you would not think about, i can't believe that their are 1.37 billion people living on less than 1.25 a day
  •
I can not believe how sad some of this facts are. I did not know that 1/3 of deaths are accounted for by poverty (hunger, homlessness) That was outragous. I really liked how quick and easy the facts were, so you learned lots in a short amount of time.
  •
These statistics account for one third of all human deaths. More people die as a result of extreme poverty than of any other cause. This article says that !8 million people die every year because of poverty and hunger. That is only 1/3 of people accounted for. There is still 2/3 that people dont evenknow about.18 million is a lot of people. But 18 million is only the number of people recorded who died. There are millions of others dieing every year more than recorded. That was a major shock to me. I dont understand how this many people alone struggle with hunger. They could go days without food in their bodys. That just amazes me.
