I can not believe 1.5 million people in ohio make less then $22,050 a year. Its so sad, to think that maybe they couldn't get food for their family or have a cozy house to go to at night.

there was a great family in ohio, then one day everything changed and turned in a different direction. one night the father looses his job, and then that once great family became under the level of poverty. they need help!

This article form the Columbus Dispatch is talking about how Ohio's population has increased since 2002 by 1.2 percent while the people living in poverty has grown 41.7%. I was really surprised at how many people live in poverty in our state. I think That This increase had to do with so many job losses in ohio

yes but its in our state too. some of us don't realize. probably some of us thought it was in like africa at first.

I know there is poverty everywhere, but never thought there was so much in Ohio.

Jeez, I'm almost 16 years-old, and knowing that I might not get a good paying sulks, and knowing that Ohio is going into poverty makes it even more worse! I wonder what it will be like in 2015, or 2020?

This article in the Columbus Dispatch gives statistics and info about the poverty rate in Ohio. Acording to the article, 1.5 million people live in Ohio, and 13.7% of them live in poverty. This shocks me because I've never really seen or heard of people living in Ohio being in poverty.

Yea like my mom works for Marion City school and works with special needs kids with adhd learning disabilites and most of the famileis in Marion Live in Poverty. It just makes me sad.

This article was posted on January 22, 2010, just one year ago. In this article you will find suprising statstics, showing the hgh rate of poverty in our own home state. The unemployment rate has soared in the past few years, and more Ohioans are finding it hard to cope. This article almost made me sick to my stomach, seeing that so many people are living in poverty, and that I was totoally oblivious to it. I felt guilty in a sense, since I have not even NOTICED that there was such a problem with poverty. It was very informational, as well as somewhat recent.

This article literally comes close to home. Everybody thinks that Columbus and the suburbs of it are really rich, but the statistics proved me wrong.. And the fact that we've gone nine months now with "double digit unemployment" is too bad. Everybody deserves to be supported. If our society makes money so important for life, why can't they provide jobs? Ridiculous...

I thought that this article contained many good statistics. The one about how the population living in Ohio has grown by 41 percent since 2002 was very fascinating and sad to hear. That is a huge change.

this gives information about the poverty levels in ohio and gives the total household income of every year (22,000). they wern't joking at the food pantry. this is something that people really need to think about.

I was so sad when i found out that in 2009, 15.5 million (20.7 percent) children under the age of 18 were in poverty. Just imagen there could be some in are class.

it was sad that throughout the years the percent tile has increased but it is a good thing that some of the numbers are going down aswell. that means people are getting better with their life. :D but its still veeery sad that people have to live like this.

All the statistics started to scare me. With all of the percentages and numbers, and with them RISING< it just is kind of worrying me.

I can't believe 11% of all families are in poverty. That's about one in ten families. I know at least ten families... It's too bad that there is enough money and resources for everyone, but after preschool, everyone forgot how to share. Imagine how the world would be more serene if everyone had the same amount of money.

I was surprised to hear that 5.6 million people in the U.S. have used food pantries, that is a lot more than I thought.

i never knew how big of an impact food pantries had. i was surprised that 4.8% of people in the US had to go to a food pantry once...i thought only a few homeless people went there. and that 57% of people in poverty get reduced lunches in school...i could not imagine how embarassing that would be.

This website is about world poverty and its effects. The home page has a map of people dying all around the world because of hunger/hunger related causes.

This website shows deaths this hour, and sadly it is mostly kids ans women who die. I noticed none of the deaths are from America.

Well, this article tells you facts about poverty. It tells you organizations that help out this problem too. It told me that over 25,000 people die because of poverty and I was like, "OMGNOWAY!!"

It really mad me sad to see all of the faces on the map. It made me sad, but yet it mezmorized me to see all of the people that had died

I hated how the faces were showing up, but what made me sad was that most of them were in asia, africa, and a few were in south america. What i REALLY didn't like was at the bottom of the home page, it said the faces and the names were fake.

One person dies every 3 and a half seconds according to the United Nations. Children die more often than adults. The world has plenty of food to feed everyone but the problem is that people are trapped in severe poverty. They dont have the money to buy the food. If they never have food, they become week and sick causing them to not work and they get poorer. There are programs around the world the can help children buy food when they are at school so their families can save money.

It's sad just knowing how many people die from poverty, but seeing their faces makes it even worse!

I was very surprised that one billion people cant read. I think not being able to read would affect how you live because reading is a big part of life. In most jobs there is a need to know how to read, and if you dont know how, you're not going to stay in a job for very long.

iI couldn't believe that half the world is in poverty. I can't imagine not being able to read. my life would be really boring if i couldn't read.

I was shocked when i saw that more than 37 million americans living in poverty.I didnt know there was that many people living in poverty.

I was shocked where it said, "At least 80% of humanitly lives on less than $10 a day". There's something wrong with humanity if this is all we have. This article gives a lot of surprising facts.

Some of the graphs really made me sad. There was $105 billion spent on alcoholic drinks and $400 billion spent on narcotics drugs, what really made me sad was that there was only $6 billion spent on BASIC education, and $9 billion spent on water sanitation throughout the world. It made me sad..

These are statistics about poverty. There are several graphs and charts that show how poverty effects different countries. Alot of the graphs are surprising and make me very sad. In 1998 more money was spent on Narcotics Drugs and Alcoholic Drinks than was spent on sanitation, basic education, and health (nutrition)

THis article talks about poverty and tells us how we can help prevent it. It also has some facts about poverty like how many live in poverty on average.

I can't even imagine trying to live on less than $1.25 a day. It's great to know that, in the past 30 years, the amount of people in the world having to live like this has halved, from 1.9 billion to 1.4 billion. We still have a long, long way to go! This site can give us some ideas on how to change things for the better for our generation, and generations to come.

It really amazed me how little they live on a day. They live on a dollar a day and I go the mall and buy $100 worth of clothes.

It Disturbied me to learn that about every min some where in the wolrd a women dies giving birth. It also shocked me that about 40% of the worlds population doesnt have bacis sanitary water.

A lot of the facts in this are pretty suprising, like that every 3.6 some one dies of starvation.

It made me feel really bad when it said that six million kids die every year from malnutrition before their 5th birthday.

I could not believe that 800 million people every day go to bed hungry, and that 300 million of them are kids.

800 million people go to bed hungry every night! I don't even know what it feels like to be starved or to go to bed without food. I can't even begin to imagine what these people are going through.

Tara's right...it's hard to put yourself in somebody else's shoes when you are so used to having basic things, like food. But it's important to try.

The Paragrapsh that really caught my attention was the phone tittled "Big corperations make poor pay higher taxes" becuase it just seems crazy to me that you would tax the people who are the most likely not to be able to pay? not to mention the majority who would be buying the corperations product?

If i was hungry before i went to bed, i would just walk downstairs and get a snack. It's hard to imagine that these people do not have that, and that they are almost always hungry. I just can't even imagine that.

mr reed the world sucks te rich are paying incentives to government so they wont raise taxes on the rich. so where are they gonna get the money? middle and lower class people!

This article is very depressing, the way it's written. But, it does have very interesting facts. It's hard to believe that basically 1 in 6 people are living on less than a dollar a day. In our country, a dollar can barely buy you a burrito or a burger. Although some people may use the excuse that stuff costs less in other places, so what? In our country, the minimum wage is about $56 dollars a day, and a lot of people have other money saved up. It seems like so much, compared to the less than one dollar, but people are barely getting by on that. It's just not fair that a lot of people have a ton of money, but there are more people living on pratically no money.

D: That's so sad.I know there are a lot of people out there who can't get the kind of healthcare they need, and I know a ton of people who go to the hospital often. If there are that many in my neighborhood, I wonder how many can't afford to go to the hospital.

This article was really sad, I couldn't believe that over 250,000 children die from hunger each week. I think it gave lots of good information without too much to read.

These facts are really depressing its so upsetting to hear that a child dies every fives seconds and how the recession has pushed 100-150 million people into poverty

I can't believe that just last year the entire total of people in poverty reached all the way up to 100-150 million people. It's really shocking that while this was happening, I was sitting here without a clue. It's truly amazing what goes on when you turn away for but a moment.

just think of all the people we can help if everyone donates and takes the quiz. We can help make an effort to make a difference to people in poverty. They should have more websites like this. Something for like homeless people. Everytime you answer something, something can be donated to a homelss shelter or something. I dont know, sounds good to me.

I really like this website, how you can donate grains of rice for answering questions. It's like a two way street. People in poverty get rice while we get to learn. I just wish they had some harder questions. These are too easy for me. but i did donate 530 grains of rice!

That's a good way to help. It's entertaining for the viewer/player as well as helpful. Navigating the site you're bound to learn more about the hungry and poor.

i like the quiz, but i don't know if they actually donating rice. if they do donate rice i think it is a smart idea, but if they don't donate rice, then what is the point?

This website is sweet! I think this was a really cool way to start fighting poverty while learning new things. It does go slowly but i will definatly do this again sometime.

I took the quiz and donated 1000 grains of rice LITERALLY. That is also a great way to fight poverty and it is a awesome idea. But they should have more publicity to get to millions more people.

I donated 500 grains of rice by answer 50 questions in a row. This is a great idea, because it gives people a game that teaches them, and they're also helping to feed the less fourtunate! I wonder what other ideas we could spin off of this?

wow this is so sad. i world of never thought over 8 million kids die a year in the world. the Haiti earthquake was terrible but i never knew every ten days as many people died in the earth quake was as many kids died in the ten days around the world. thats so sad :(

i can not believe that a child is dieing every 4 seconds, and 15 every minute. I don't know how they know that 15 children are dieing every minute or 22,000 children are dieing every day. I think that it is sad that most people don't donate money to people who need it.

Its so sad that so many children died before there 5th birthday! 8 MILLION children. It really gives perspectice to the situation and i know people go with 8 million children dying if i helped by donating it wouldn't make a difference but it will. If everyone thought that same way the number of kids dying each year would be soooo much higher.

I heard on NPR that surprisingly, more people are looking up to the richer people for help, than looking down on them and blaming them that they hoard a lot of money and that they should be at fault for the economy.

I could not believe that the war in I raq has killed as many people in five years as poverty killed in four days!

It's kind of sad how selfish and uncaring people are/can be. Once the amount of money between people is even, poverty wont be a problem. Unfortunately, I don't think that's going to change anytime soon...
