Crossing-over: Genetic Recombination - 0 views

  •
While genes determine most of our physical characteristics, the exact combination of genes we inherit, and thus our physical traits, is in part due to a process our chromosomes undergo, known as genetic recombination.

Mitosis - 0 views

  •
How are the stages of mitosis related to the creation of identical daughter cells? The primary function of the stages of mitosis is to make certain that each daughter cell is genetically identical to the mother cell. The mother cell's DNA is copied during interphase. During mitosis the chromosomes condense from long strands to highly coiled structures. The two copies of each DNA strand, called sister chromatids, are physically attached to one another. The chromosomes are moved to the center of the cell and split apart in a highly coordinated fashion. The condensation of the chromosomes, the physical connection of the sister chromatids, and the precise movement of the chromosomes are all important in making sure that each daughter cell has one copy of each chromosome and is genetically identical to the mother cell.

The physics of the sneeze - YouTube - 0 views

  •
Sneezes play an important part in the spread of infections, but we don't know a huge amount about how they work. Lydia Bourouiba's lab at MIT is trying to change that, using slow motion footage and other measurements to study the fluid dynamics of sneezing.

How Europeans evolved white skin | Science | AAAS - 0 views

  •
ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI-Most of us think of Europe as the ancestral home of white people. But a new study shows that pale skin, as well as other traits such as tallness and the ability to digest milk as adults, arrived in most of the continent relatively recently. The work, presented here last week at the 84th annual meeting of the American Association of Physical Anthropologists, offers dramatic evidence of recent evolution in Europe and shows that most modern Europeans don't look much like those of 8000 years ago.

Lesson Plans | Personal Genetics Education Project - 1 views

  •
We create interactive lessons for high school and college educators to engage their students in discussions of ethics and personal genetics. The lessons are relevant to multiple subjects, including biology, health, social studies, law, physical education and psychology. All of our lesson plans contain background reading for teachers and students, a selection of classroom activities, discussion points, in some cases a slide presentation or video clip, and an evaluation. Each lesson can stand alone, or all the lessons can be taught as a unit.

Contents of Essentials of Cell Biology | Learn Science at Scitable - 0 views

  •
The cellular life cycle, also called the cell cycle, includes many processes necessary for successful self-replication. Beyond carrying out the tasks of routine metabolism, the cell must duplicate its components - most importantly, its genome - so that it can physically split into two complete daughter cells. The cell must also pass through a series of checkpoints that ensure conditions are favorable for division.

Is Sex Education Failing American Teens? - YouTube - 0 views

  •
4:00 video 93% of Americans agree that sex education should be taught in schools, but what's the best approach to get teens to practice safe sex? Read More: Sex Education Delays Teens' Sexual Activity http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/03... "Teens who receive formal sex education wait longer to have sex, a new study finds - and when they do get around to doing the deed, they're more likely than teens who haven't had sex ed to use contraception." Sex Education in the U.S. is Screwing Our Kids http://www.salon.com/2014/12/01/why_s... "Government-funded abstinence programs and a lack of instructor training are failing the country's teens." Teaching Good Sex http://www.nytimes.com/2011/11/20/mag... "Across the country, the approach ranges from abstinence until marriage is the only acceptable choice, contraceptives don't work and premarital sex is physically and emotionally harmful, to abstinence is usually best, but if you must have sex, here are some ways to protect yourself from pregnancy and disease."

Scientists Discover Children's Cells Living in Mothers' Brains - Scientific American - 0 views

  •
The physical connection between mother and fetus is provided by the placenta, an organ, built of cells from both the mother and fetus, which serves as a conduit for the exchange of nutrients, gasses, and wastes. Cells may migrate through the placenta between the mother and the fetus, taking up residence in many organs of the body including the lung, thyroid, muscle, liver, heart, kidney and skin. These may have a broad range of impacts, from tissue repair and cancer prevention to sparking immune disorders.

Research News: New Genetic Syndrome Linked to Missing DNA | Howard Hughes Medical Insti... - 0 views

  •
[ February 17, 2008 ] People who lack a certain large segment of DNA have a previously unrecognized syndrome characterized by mental retardation, seizures, and slight physical abnormalities, according to a genetic analysis conducted by HHMI investigator Evan E. Eichler at the University of Washington School of Medicine and a team of international collaborators. The deleted DNA segment is responsible for just a small percentage of cases of mental retardation, but "when you think about how common mental retardation is," Eichler says, "this deletion has a significant impact on human health."

Activities Preview | RI-ITEST Project Portal - 2 views

  •
The goal of RI-ITEST is to prepare diverse students for careers in information technologies by engaging them in exciting, inquiry- based learning activities that use sophisticated computational models in support of a revolutionary science curriculum. Teachers will incorporate interactive computer models developed under the Science of Atoms and Molecules (SAM) project at the Concord Consortium. These materials were specifically designed to support a deeper understanding of science made possible through interactive computer simulations and the new physics-chemistry-biology sequence. Connections will be made between the models students use to learn science and possible careers in research and industry where computer modeling is used.
