Excerpt: Apple's general counsel Bruce Sewell in July 2010 sent a 13-page letter (.pdf) explaining its location-data-collection techniques in response to a request from Congressmen Joe Barton and Edward Markey asking for Apple to disclose such practices (.pdf). (Incidentally, Markey authored the "Do Not Track" bill to stop online companies from tracking children.) Researchers have discovered that the iPhone is keeping track of where you go and storing that information in a file that is stored - unencrypted and unprotected - on any machine with which you synchronize your phone. It is not clear why Apple is collecting this data. Data scientists Alasdair Allan and Pete Warden came across the file - "consolidated.db"

California would be leading the charge for individuals online privacy rights, with a bill currently in the house that can be likened to the "no call list". The bill would not allow companies to track your online habits, as most do now, in order to provide web sites with advertisements based on your previous web history. This legislation is mirroring legislation at the federal level, as the Obama Administration has stated its interest in creating a "privacy bill of rights".

This article talks about a recently legalized alternative business structure for nonprofits to consider. Establishing an L3C instead of a nonprofit seems a better title. This is similar to considering if you want to be LLC or corporation from the nonprofit standpoint. If you are allowed to make a little more profit it seems to be a good choice. The lack of a long track record could make it risky.

I think as technology progresses we will find more and more services such as this. This could prove to be very useful for people who find the tax season complicated and tedious. I think that this is a good attempt by the IRS to incorporate technology into their services to the public.

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency awarded $2.7 million to Lockheed Martin Corp. to develop military command and control systems. This system will help commanders on the field track other systems and strategize on the fly. This system will also monitor fighters and their communication and weapons.

Technology has been dramatically improving relief efforts in places like Haiti. For example, "crowd sourcing" can be used to get information on any medical emergencies and to track trapped victims and then it can be used to create an online map that can be used by relief workers. Volunteers have been using GPS on their phones to help them through unfamiliar areas.
