20th century Fox The film "The Day After Tomorrow" was all good fiction when it came out in 2004, but now scientists are finding eerie truths to the possibilities of sudden temperature, So much for the "global warming" controversy. Are we getting warmer or colder? Looking ahead to the future, there is no reason why such a freeze shouldn't happen again

I feel like the Cowardly Lion from The Wizard of Oz. The difference is the mantra. His was affirming his belief in spooks, mine is fighting my dread of winter: "I do believe winter can be fun. I do believe winter can be fun. I do, I do, I do!" Because truth be told, I don't think it's a whole lot of fun. This is because I'd prefer being in a tank dress over a down coat any day of the week. But, my current reality is that I live where it's cold half of the year. And I am a fun girl. So I've got to find a way to make it work.

Recently I left the cold and dark of a Sydney winter and journeyed north to the warmer climate of Fiji. There would be no resorts, no five-star dining and my company was to be a group of 24 Year Nine students. It was to be a journey full of learning and insights into the challenges facing education.

A gigantic storm buried much of America's Midwest in snow and led to at least 16 deaths yesterday. The weather system created blizzard conditions, burying cars under huge drifts. Officials reported more than a foot of snow Des Moines, Iowa, and nearly 19 inches just south of Madison, Wisconsin. Gusts of up to 50 mph created snow drifts up to 15 feet tall and even knocked down a two-story Christmas tree in downtown Champaign, Illinois. Read more:

Yet another list of iPhone apps to trawl through though this one is perhaps more serious than most as it focusses on things environmental. From the Treehugger group it contains short reviews and links to a range of green apps including carbon calculators, Offset calculators, a range of metering and measuring apps amongst others. Whilst many may be of personal interest there are a number that may be also useful in the classroom context.

The bushfire crisis that is currently impacting Australia is beyond devastating. The scale of these fires defies the imagination. For so long now we have lived with skies laden with smoke as a constant and inescapable reminder that this is not an ordinary summer. This is weather and drought at its most extreme. Our only salvation will be rain but this is not the season for that and the long term forecasts are not promising. Our young people, in particular, will be affected and will need special care in the weeks and months to come. What might this mean for schools and for student agency?
