By Justin Miller On August 25, 2008, two little boys walked into public elementary schools in Southeast Washington, D.C. Both boys were African American fifth-graders. The previous spring, both had tested below grade level in math. One walked into Kimball Elementary School and climbed the stairs to Mr. William Taylor's math classroom, a tidy, powder-blue space in which neither the clocks nor most of the electrical outlets worked. The other walked into a very similar classroom a mile away at Plummer Elementary School. In both schools, more than 80 percent of the children received free or reduced-price lunches. At night, all the children went home to the same urban ecosystem, a zip code in which almost a quarter of the families lived below the poverty line and a police district in which somebody was murdered every week or so. "ON my first day as principal of Cherbourg State School it was freezing and windy. I decided to wear a tie, thinking that if kids at other schools see their principal wearing a tie, then these kids deserve to see their principal dressed up nice, too. I parked my car in the designated spot and took a few breaths, sizing up the situation that I was in charge of now. There were some kids sitting around in the sun trying to get warm, while others were running around and playing cricket."

THE backpacks at Albert Park College look a little small. But then everything at the school, which is entering its second year, is a little different. Students helped design the bags and point out that they do not need many books. Nor any calculators, notebooks, atlases and diaries. Instead each student has what the principal calls an "electronic pencil box": an iPad.

The goals of gamification are to achieve higher levels of engagement, change behaviors and stimulate innovation. "What does it mean to "unlearn" and what should we "unlearn"? The world is full of examples of once regarded "truths" that needed to be "unlearned": Pluto as a planet, doctors "unlearning" to use a scalpel to perform certain surgeries, world is not flat, etc.  In fact, a review of the scientific discoveries for 2012 reveals laundry list of some recent "unlearning" in the science community."
