  •
Explore the website of any school, and you will undoubtedly find a page dedicated to their Mission and Vision. Here you will find carefully crafted statements of purpose couched in the vocabulary of educational excellence and reflecting the pinnacle of human possibility. A blend of educational philosophy and marketing speak designed to promote student achievement and enrolments. e-learning: The Future of Education?? - 3 views

  • contestable assumptions that are worth discussing.  The first is that of a standard courseware development template based on one or a limited number of pedagogical approaches.  The second is that knowledge provision equates to learning. The final issue relates to the first two (indeed all three are inter-related) and is his apparent oversight of the current Personal Learning Environment (PLE) discussions and literature.
  • When a learner learns to construct their own PLE, they themselves construct the learning modules to suit their own requirements.
  • His ideas on "Learning Camps" and 24 hour access to school learning centres are excellent as is  what he calls 'Confidence-Based Learning" where testing is an integral part of student learning diagnostics and formative feedback.

Dropbox iPhone Game Review - AppVee.com - 0 views

  •
"Dropbox has been one of those extremely useful online tools for me over the past couple years and keeps getting better as time goes on. For those of you who aren't familiar with the program, it basically is a file sharing app. Once installed onto a couple computers, it then creates a folder on each user's system and syncs any files that are added into the folder. "
  •
Excellent example of how different computing files can be synchronised between computers and shared. Free for PC's & Macs (2 GB). There is a version for the iPhone as well but seems pricey.

Relationships and Uncertainty Matter Most: David Brooks in the New Yorker on Educationa... - 7 views

  • Brooks is arguing for a teaching that prioritizes inquiry, analysis, and process rather than mastering basic skills and learning the classics
  • inquiry based approach where students discuss and debate ideas, understand the importance of critically examining accepted wisdom, seek out new information and new sources and put them into the mix, construct their own answers and put them into play against other perspectives, deepening their understanding as they build their cases and accumulate more evidence for their point of view, yet still respectfully recognizing the possible validity of other points of view.
  • any environment where students and teachers are on the same inquiring side, exploring ideas and making meaning together.
  • ...2 more annotations...
  • school effectiveness is measured solely by test scores on multiple choice tests, and not on whether students are deeply connecting with teachers or whether they are developing deeper understanding, a sense of nuance, a respect for multiple perspectives, a creativity that finds and then assesses many possible right answers.
  • how can we reconcile this January 2010 New Yorker Brooks with that December 2008 New York Time Brooks?
  •
She stressed the importance of collecting conflicting information before making up one's mind, of calibrating one's certainty level to the strength of the evidence, of enduring uncertainty for long stretches as an answer became clear, of correcting for one's biases.

Constructivism - 0 views

  •
Constructivist theories grew out of the work of a couple of Russians around the time of the Russian Revolution. It is radical subjectivism dressed up as science, and has no scientific credibility whatsoever. It is used by radical educators to push their barrow that nothing the teacher knows is worth the student learning and that all knowledge is innate. It's bullsh*t. Theories like this rot are part of the reason that the bottom has dropped out of Western education and we have a generation who can't write. This should be resisted by any educator with an interest in educational excellence.
