Watch "TEDxKC - Michael Wesch - From Knowledgeable to Knowledge-Able" Video at TEDxTalks - 3 views

As we move toward an era of openness, where information is instant and infinite, it is not enough to simply have the tools and skills to access information. We must make meaning, not only through analysis and critical thinking, but also by engaging directly with knowledge, by taking it apart, putting it together, by sharing it, and by creating it.

It is an amazing presentation. Changing people attitude toward the value of knowledge and make them more involved in creating it is coming.

A paper that gives an introduction or tutorial to the Free/Open Source Software. Relevant to our discussion for module 1 are part II and III. Part II gave a brief history for such a movement. Part III explained in brief four components of F/OSS: the license (yes even something open needs a license), the community, the development process and only lastly is the software itself

Blog about analysis of open data provided by the New York City government - 2 views

  •
This blog examines open data that is provided by the New York City government. It is written by a visiting assistant professor at Pratt College in Brooklyn NY. He uses the open data in his statistics and city planning course there. The interesting thing is that every open data set has a story to tell. Journalists are realizing this and are starting to analyze this open data to write stories, it is called data journalism. If you are interested data journalism, there is a course offered on the canvas network titled Doing Journalism with Data: First Steps, Skills and Tools (link provided) https://www.canvas.net/courses/doing-journalism-with-data The great thing about this in my opinion is that with open data the world starts to become more transparent. Everyone with some statistical knowledge can access these data, analyze them, and answer questions.

La monetización de los datos personales
  •

Should Open Knowledge be associated with old and irrelevant knowledge. Going through MIT Open Course, all I could see is knowledge as old as 10 years. Well some information may still be relevant but most of the information has evolved and there is new materials. For me, this makes Open Knowledge a joke if all , that can be offered is outdated knowledge
  •
A great website of Free Online Course Materials. MIT OpenCourseWare is a web-based publication of virtually all MIT course content. OCW is open and available to the world and is a permanent MIT activity.
