Acceso abierto a la producción científica de América Latina y el Caribe. Identificación de principales instituciones para estrategias de integración regional Open access to scientific output from Latin America and the Caribbean.
On my navigation searching for initiatives to see how Open Knowledge are making the difference on the Latin America society I found this... nowadays unfortunately on South America (and in other places as well) open knowledge initiative are not divulgated. Universities seem to be not interested about promoting these initiatives and few people know about them. I was amazed reading the text from Francisco J. García-Peñalvo (Open Knowledge. Challenges and Facts) and seeing that a lot of Universities on Europe and North America are promoting and working with open and free access to texts and online courses. It's incredible how people have the possibility of learning in a world that each day is more competitive. I really hope that this great news about Brazil helps more and more people to understand the impact and the changings on the educational process.
The course video on open platforms reminded me of this amazing documentary, "Terms and Conditions May Apply". Can Facebook really be considered an open platform when they have a financial incentive to not keep users' best interests in mind?
The article was written a few years ago, but the subject is still strong on the scene.
The internet based language learning has increased as people figure that money and time can be saved, and the learning can come as good as in a regular language school.
I've studied languages on line with many of these free programs and I have really improved. Being able to connect with people from all over the world that are on the same path as you on learning helps a lot.
I believe that, that is a relevant open online resource.
"It's hard to explain to regular people how much technology barely works, how much the infrastructure of our lives is held together by the IT equivalent of baling wire.
Computers, and computing, are broken."
Love this one, because it explains in easy words the technological background why things (not) work as they work...
The BCN Open Data Portal makes public the data generated by the Barcelona City Council, excluding those subject to privacy, property or security restrictions. Data are available to everyone in standard, open, digital formats, that are clearly structured and comprehensible.
In my opinion, this is a valuable example of how governments at different levels (in this case the municipality, which is the level of government closest to the citizen), can make efforts to facilitate access to the great amount of data they collect and to encourage citizens to reuse them.
"For the past couple of decades, scholarly publishers have been populating their websites and content stores with a wealth of valuable research material. Such efforts have resulted in vast amounts of information online but the quantity of scholarly information is far too great for researchers to simply browse, find, digest and use everything. For this reason there has been an increasing interest amongst publishers in the topic of semantic enrichment, enhancing information with intelligent structure, tagging and vocabularies to improve discoverability of related and relevant resources. "
Well, a Link to another Diigo List...

In this video in very creative way is explained what is digital identity and how different it could be. It also tells that it could be stolen if people do not use privacy options.
Hackers might bee seen as a threat to security and privacy, but at the same time they fight for internet freedom, open source and open information. By finding security holes before criminals do it, maybe they are good for your privacy? I think this video is a good introduction to the global hacker culture.
